A measurement of the total $pp$ cross section at the LHC at $\\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV is presented. \nAn integrated luminosity of $500$ $\\mu$b$^{-1}$ was accumulated \nin a special run with high-$\\beta^{\\star}$ beam optics \nto measure the differential elastic cross section as a function of \nthe Mandelstam momentum transfer variable $t$. The measurement is performed with the ALFA sub-detector of \nATLAS. Using a fit to the differential elastic cross section in the $-t$ range from $0.014$ GeV$^2$ to $0.1$ GeV$^2$ to \nextrapolate $t\\rightarrow 0$, the total cross section, $\\sigma_{\\mathrm{tot}}(pp\\rightarrow X)$, \nis measured via the optical theorem to be:\n$\\sigma_{\\mathrm{tot}}(pp\\rightarrow X) = \\mbox{96.07} \\; \\pm 0.18 \\; ({\\mbox{stat.}}) \\pm 0.85 \\; \n({\\mbox{exp.}}) \\pm 0.31 \\; (\\mbox{extr.}) \\; \\mbox{mb} \\;,$\nwhere the first error is statistical, the second accounts for all experimental systematic uncertainties and the last \nis related to uncertainties in the extrapolation $t\\rightarrow 0$. \nIn addition, the slope of the exponential function describing the elastic cross section at small $t$ is determined to be $B = 19.74 \\pm 0.05 \\; ({\\mbox{stat.}}) \\pm 0.23 \\; ({\\mbox{syst.}}) \\; \\mbox{GeV}^{-2}$.","hasPart":[{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.73997.v1/t1","@type":"Dataset","description":"The measured total cross section, the first systematic error accounts for all experimental uncertainties and the second error for the...","name":"Table 1"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.73997.v1/t2","@type":"Dataset","description":"The nuclear slope of the differential eslastic cross section at small |t|, the first systematic error accounts for all experimental...","name":"Table 2"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.73997.v1/t3","@type":"Dataset","description":"The total elastic cross section and the observed elastic cross section within the fiducial volume.","name":"Table 3"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.73997.v1/t4","@type":"Dataset","description":"The total inelastic cross section.","name":"Table 4"},{"@id":"https://doi.org/10.17182/hepdata.73997.v1/t5","@type":"Dataset","description":"The measured differential elastic cross section.
