Measurement of pion induced neutron-production double-differential cross sections on Fe and Pb at 870-MeV and 2.1-GeV

Neutron-production double-differential cross sections for 870MeVπ+ and π− and 2.1GeVπ+ mesons incident on iron and lead targets were measured with NE213 liquid scintillators by time-of-flight technique. NE213 liquid scintillators 12.7cm in diameter and 12.7cm thick were placed in directions of 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150°. The typical flight path length was 1.5m. Neutron detection efficiencies were evaluated by calculation results of SCINFUL and CECIL codes. The experimental results were compared with JAERI quantum molecular dynamics code. For the meson incident reactions, adoption of NN in-medium effects was slightly useful for reproducing 870MeVπ+-incident neutron yields at neutron energies of 10–30MeV, as was the case for proton incident reactions. The π− incident reaction generates more neutrons than π+ incidence as the number of nucleons in targets decrease.

PARTICLE MULTIPLICITIES AND MULTIPLICITY CORRELATIONS OBSERVED IN pi p COLLISIONS WITH HE NE NUCLEI IN A STREAMER CHAMBER

We have measured the multiplicities of particles emitted in collisions between π's and p's of 1.5 to 2.5 GeV/c momentum with He and Ne nuclei in a streamer chamber. The chamber gas served as the target as well as the detecting medium. Because of the low density and 4π solid angle of the detector, it was possible to detect nuclear fragments with energies less than 5 MeV, and to essentially count all the particles emitted in a collision. Event distributions as a function of track multiplicity were obtained as well as correlated event distributions. NUCLEAR REACTIONS He (proton or pion, fragments and pions), Ne (proton or pion, fragments and pions), E=1.5, 2.0, 2.5 BeV/c; streamer chamber gas used as target with fragment energies as low as 5 MeV. Measured multiplicities and correlations of produced particle types.

Forward Inclusive Production Spectrum of $K(s$), $\Lambda^0$, $\bar{\Lambda}$0, and $n$ in the Collision of 200-{GeV}/$c \pi^-$, $K^-$, $\bar{p}$ and $p$ on Be

We have measured the forward production spectra of various neutral particles produced by π−, K−, p¯, and p at 200 GeV/c, and by π− at 290 GeV/c incident on a Be target. The salient features of these measurements are (1) copious production of KSo at large Feynman xL for incident π− and K−, (2) production of roughly equal fluxes of Λ0 and Λ¯0 for incident π−, and (3) close similarity of the following spectra: π−→n and K−→Λ0; π−→Λ0, π−→Λ¯0, and p→KS0; π−→KS0 and p→Λ0. The overall features of the various distributions seem to agree with the ideas of dimensional counting presented in the constituent-interchange model of quark collisions. Results are presented in terms of the invariant cross section Ed3σ(xL, PT=0)dp3 per Be nucleus for each inclusive reaction.
