From the measured ratio of the invisible and the leptonic decay widths of theZ0, we determine the number of light neutrino species to beNv=3.05±0.10. We include our measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry for the leptonic channels in a fit to determine the vector and axial-vector neutral current coupling constants of charged leptons to theZ0. We obtain\(\bar g_V=- 0.046_{ - 0.012}^{ + 0.015}\) and\(\bar g_A=- 0.500 \pm 0.003\). In the framework of the Standard Model, we estimate the top quark mass to bemt=193−69+52±16 (Higgs) GeV, and we derive a value for the weak mixing angle of sin2θW=1−(MW/MZ)2=0.222 ± 0.008, corresponding to an effective weak mixing angle of\(\sin ^2 \bar \theta _W= 0.2315\pm0.0025\).

Using the Collider Detector at Fermilab, the W-boson differential cross section dσ/dPT is measured using W→eν events in proton-antiproton collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. A next-to-leading-order theoretical calculation agrees well with the data. The cross section (σ) for PT>50 GeV/c is measured to be 423±58(stat)±108(syst) pb.

The excitation of theΔ resonance is observed in proton collisions on C, Nb and Pb targets at 0.8 and 1.6 GeV incident energies. The mass E0 and widthΓ of the resonance are determined from the invariant mass spectra of correlated (p, π±)-pairs in the final state of the collision: The mass E0 is smaller than that of the free resonance, however by comparing to intra-nuclear cascade calculations, this reduction is traced back to the effects of Fermi motion, NN scattering and pion reabsorption in nuclear matter.

We report on a systematic study of midrapidity transverse energy production and forward energy flow in interactions of16O and32S projectiles with S, Cu, Ag and Au targets at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon. The variation of the shape of theET distributions with target and projectile mass can be understood from collision geometry. AverageET values determined for central collisions show an increasing stopping power for heavier target nuclei. A higher relative stopping is observed at 60 GeV/nucleon than at 200 GeV/nucleon. Bjorken estimates of the energy density reach approximately 3 GeV/fm3 in highET events at 200 GeV/nucleon with16O and32S projectiles. The systematics of the data and the shapes ofET and pseudorapidity distributions are well described by the Lund model Fritiof.

We report on a study of inclusive particle production in pp-interactions at 400 GeV/c. The data are based on 472 K reconstructed events recorded in the NA 27 experiment using the LEBC-EHS facility at CERN. The production cross sections are determined of pseudo scalar (π±,0, η andK±), scalar (f0(975)), vector (ρ±,0(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020),K*0(892), and\(\bar K^{ * 0} \)(892)), and tensorf0 mesons, of protons and antiprotons, and theΔ++,+,0(1232), and Λ(1520) baryon resonances in the forward hemisphere of the center of mass system, as well as longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions. The results are compared with predictions of the FRITIOF model and with other experimental data.

We present a study of energy-energy correlations based on 83 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. From this data we determine the strong coupling constant α s to second order QCD: α s (91.2 GeV)=0.121±0.004(exp.)±0.002(hadr.) −0.006 +0.009 (scale)±0.006(theor.) from the energy-energy correlation and α s (91.2 GeV)=0.115±0.004(exp.) −0.004 +0.007 (hadr.) −0.000 +0.002 (scale) −0.005 +0.003 (theor.) from its asymmetry using a renormalization scale μ 1 =0.1 s . The first error (exp.) is the systematic experimental uncertainly, the statistical error is negligible. The other errors are due to hadronization (hadr.), renormalization scale (scale) uncertainties, and differences between the calculated second order corrections (theor.).
Statistical errors are equal to or less than 0.6 pct in each bin. There is also a 4 pct systematic uncertainty.
ALPHA_S from the EEC measurement.. The first error given is the experimental error which is mainly the overall systematic uncertainty: the first (DSYS) error is due to hadronization, the second to the renormalization scale, and the third differences between the calculated and second order corrections.

Inclusive π − spectra have been measured for 14 N+C collisions at 41 A , 67 A , 80 A and 135 A MeV, the lowest energies measured for the charged pion. The cross sections fall exponentially with T π and the exponential slope factors at 90° in the nucleon-nucleon center of mass frame are determined. Energy distributions below a beam energy of 100 A MeV are less steep than expected from the monotonic decrease of the slope factor down to 100 A MeV. The production mechanism of energetic pions far below threshold is discussed for several models.

We have measured the polarization of D*, the energy dependence of the polarization, and the spin-density matrix of D* in e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV using the Time Projection Chamber detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. In 147 pb−1 of data we see no strong evidence for polarization, alignment, or final-state interactions in this fragmentation process.
Polarization is the factor alpha(z) in the expression d width (D*-->D pi)/domega = C(1+alpha(z)cos(theta)**2).

A measurement of the QCD jet-broadening parameter 〈QT〉 is described for high-ET jet data in the central calorimeter of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. As an alternate approach to clustering analysis, this method involves the use of a global event parameter which is free from the ambiguities associated with the definition and separation of individual clusters. The parameter QT is defined as the scalar sum of the transverse momentum perpendicular to the transverse thrust axis. Parton-level QCD predictions are made for 〈QT〉 as a function of ET, the total transverse energy in the events, and suggest that a measurement would show a dependence on the running of the strong coupling constant αs. Comparisons are made to first-order QCD parton-level calculations, as well as to fully evolved and hadronized leading-log simulations. The data are well described by the QCD predictions.
A small asymmetry in the systematic uncertainty has been ignored. Given here are the average values.
