Differential cross sections for the reaction π−p→π0n were measured at nine incident-pion kinetic energies in the interval from 500 to 1300 MeV. The negative pion beam from the bevatron was focused on a liquidhydrogen target completely surrounded by a cubic array of six steel-plate spark chambers. The spark chambers were triggered on events with neutral final states. Charge-exchange events were identified from the one-shower and two-shower events in the spark-chamber pictures. By the Monte Carlo technique, the π0 distributions were calculated from the bisector distributions of the two-shower π0 events together with the observed γ-ray distributions of the one-shower π0 events. These π0 distributions were fitted with both Legendre-polynomial expansions and power-series expansions by the method of least squares. The extrapolated forward differential cross sections are in good agreement with the dispersion calculations. The Legendre coefficients for the differential cross sections in isospin state T=12 were obtained by combining our results with available data on π±p elastic scattering. In the light of existing phase-shift solutions, the behavior of these coefficients is discussed. The D5F5 interference term that peaks near 900 MeV is verified to be in isospin state T=12 only. We report here also the total neutral cross sections and the cross sections for the production of neutral multipion final states 2π0n and 3π0n. The 4π solid angle and the calibrated energy response of the spark chambers contribute to the accuracy of the results.

Differential cross sections for the photoproduction of pi-zero mesons from protons have been measured at angles between 10° and 70° c.m. in the energy range 0.85 GeV to 1.30 GeV. The values are compared with the fits to pion photoproduction data from three recent partial-wave analyses.

Measurements of differential cross sections for pi-zero photoproduction from protons have been made at angles between 60° and 140° c.m. in the photon energy range 0.7 GeV to 1.7 GeV. The data are compared with the rits provided by three recent partial-wave analyses of pion photoproduction and some significant discrepancies observed.

Measurements have been made of the target asymmetry parameter for photoproduction of π 0 mesons from protons, using a butanol polarised target with a 3 He cryostat. Results were obtained at 14 incident photon energies between 0.7 GeV and 1.45 GeV over an angular range ∼40° to 145° c.m. The recent analysis of Barbour and Crawford provides a very good fit to the data.

Measurements have been made of the polarisation parameters Σ , T and P for the process γ p → π + n in the photon energy range 520–2250 MeV at c.m. angles between 30° and 120°. These data were obtained in a double polarisation experiment, using the polarised photon beam from the Daresbury electron synchrotron incident on a polarised proton target. Measurements have been made of the polarisation parameters G and H for the process γ p→ π + n in the photon energy range 600–1875 MeV and pion c.m. angles between 30° and 100°. These data were obtained in a double polarisation experiment, in which the polarised photon beam from the Daresbury electron synchrotron was incident upon a polarised proton target. Theoretical predictions from a current analysis are compared with the data.
