The proton polarization in the γ d → pn reaction has been measured at a c.m. angle of 90° and photon energies between 350 and 700 MeV, using a carbon polarimeter. The magnitude of the polarization shows a sharp energy dependence with a peak of about −80% at around 500–550 MeV. This feature cannot be explained by conventional models and seems to indicate a new mechanism in the dibaryon system.

Proton polarization in γd→pn has been measured at c.m. angle around 90° and photon energies from 325 to 725 MeV. The polarization increases sharply with the photon energy, reaching a high maximum of (-80±8)% around 500-550 MeV. Such a high polarization with a sharp energy dependence seems to indicate a new effect in the dibaryon system.

The quasifree $\overrightarrow{\gamma} d\to\pi^0n(p)$ photon beam asymmetry, $\Sigma$, has been measured at photon energies, $E_\gamma$, from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49 to 148$^\circ$. In this kinematic region, polarization observables are sensitive to contributions from the $\Delta (1232)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances. The extracted values of $\Sigma$ have been compared to predictions based on partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the existing pion photoproduction database. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID, and Bonn-Gatchina analyses; while a revised SAID fit, including the new $\Sigma$ measurements, has also been performed. In addition, isospin symmetry is examined as a way to predict $\pi^0n$ photoproduction observables, based on fits to published data in the channels $\pi^0p$, $\pi^+n$, and $\pi^-p$.

The polarization observable I^s, a feature exclusive to the acoplanar kinematics of multi-meson final states produced via linearly polarized photons, has been measured for the first time. Results for the reaction g p -> p pi0 eta are presented for incoming photon energies between 970 MeV and 1650 MeV along with the beam asymmetry I^c. The comparably large asymmetries demonstrate a high sensitivity of I^s to the dynamics of the reaction. Fits using Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis demonstrate that the new polarization observables carry significant information on the contributing partial waves.

The differential cross section and deuteron analysing powers of the dp -> {pp}n charge-exchange reaction have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. Using a deuteron beam of energy 1170 MeV, data were obtained for small momentum transfers to a {pp} system with low excitation energy. A good quantitative understanding of all the measured observables is provided by the impulse approximation using known neutron-proton amplitudes. The proof of principle achieved here for the method suggests that measurements at higher energies will provide useful information in regions where the existing np database is far less reliable.

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to K − p interactions over the c.m. energy range 1720 to 1796 MeV. Channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained for the final states K − p , K 0 n , π 0 Λ and π ± Σ ∓ . These data are compared with those from previously published experiments and with the predictions from the RL-IC 77 partial-wave amplitudes for each of these channels.

Proton-deuteron radiative capture has been studied with polarized deuterons at a laboratory deuteron energy E d = 45 MeV. Precise data for the tensor analyzing power A yy have been measured in the angular range 50° to 160°. Three-nucleon Faddeev wave functions in the initial scattering and final bound state are calculated using realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. Mesonic exchange currents are included according to Siegert's theorem. Comparison to other recent experimental data is performed as well.

The tensor analyzing power T 20 for the reaction d ↑ + 12 C → π ± (0°) + X has been measured with a polarized deuteron beam from 6.2 to 9.0 GeV/ c at a pion momentum3.0 GeV/ c . This experiment is focused on “cumulatively produced pions”, which are produced beyond the kinematically allowed limit for free nucleon-nucleon collisions. The measured values of T 20 turn out to be close to zero. They are in disagreement with the results of our impulse approximation calculation which is based on a single NN → πNN interaction and takes into account the internal motion of nucleons in the deuteron. Possible explanations of the result are discussed.

The vector analyzing power Ay for the reaction Full-size image (<1 K) has been measured at five angles between 60° and 140° in the lab at an incident neutron energy of 67.7 MeV. The measurement is of a presision never before acheived (ΔAy ⩽ 0.01, statistical) for this observable. This precision makes possible a quantitative comparison with meson-exchange theories, thus enhancing our understanding of the role of non-nucleonic degrees of freedom.
