We have measured the cross section of four charged pion production in photon-photon interactions in the invariant mass range 1.0≦Wγγ≦3.2 GeV and up toQ2=16 GeV2. For 1.2 GeV≦Wγγ≦1.7 GeV the process is dominated by ρ0ρ0 production with a rapid rise in cross section around 1.2 GeV, well below the nominal ρ0ρ0 threshold. The observed distributions in the two particle masses and in the production and decay angles are well described by an incoherent sum of the phase-space subprocesses γγ →ρ0ρ0, →ρ0π+π−, and →π+π−π+π−. A spin-parity analysis of the ρ0ρ0 system showsJP=2+ to dominate, although 0+ is also possible forWγγ≦1.4 GeV. Negative partity states are excluded.

A tagged photon beam and multiparticle spectrometer have been used to measure the backward photoproduction process γp → Δ ++ π − . The energy dependence of the production cross section between 2.8 and 4.8 GeV is studied and found to exhibit shrinkage in excess of that expected for Δ σ dominance. An interpretation of the production mechanism in terms of an incoherent mixture of Δ σ exchange and a “hard scattering” contribution is presented.

The s and t dependence of φ (1019) photoproduction has been investigated in the incident photon energy range 2.8 to to 4.8 GeV. Differential cross-sections and density matrix elements are presented for a t range extending from t min out to −1.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The results are discussed in terms discussed in terms of an effective Regge trajectory in the t -channel.

We present measurements on the inclusive structure function for π 0 photoproduction for the incident photon energy range of 2.8–4.8 GeV. Comparisons are made with electroproduction data and it is found that the scaling behaviour already observed for finite q 2 continues to be valid at q 2 = 0.

A measurement of backward photoproduction of charged pion pairs on protons is reported. The pion pair mass spectrum shows strong ϱ ° and f production. Data are presented on the u and s dependence for ϱ O and f, together with the decay polarisation for the ϱ O .

AVERAGED OVER U RANGE OF EXPERIMENT. NO EVIDENCE FOR ANY LARGE S-WAVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE PI PI SYSTEM IN THE RHO0 MASS REGION (RHO(0S) < -0.03 +- 0.13). U CHANNEL FRAME: Z AXIS IN INCIDENT PROTON DIRECTION IN THE DIPION REST FRAME.
The elastic photoproduction of four pions has been studied at incident photon energies between 2.8 and 4.8 GeV. Production cross-sections are presented and an analysis of the angular decay correlations is also described, indicating a large 1− contribution in both final states, π+ π− π+ π− and π+ π− π0 π0. A quantitative understanding of these and other available 4π photoproduction data in terms of the ρ′(∼1.2GeV) and the ρ′(∼1.6) is presented.

In the analysis of the reactione+e−→e+e−KS0Ks0 clear evidence for exclusive γγ→f2′ resonance production is observed. The productΓγγ ·B(f2′→K\(\bar K\)) is measured to be 0.10−0.03−0.02+0.04+0.03 keV independent of ana priori assumption on the helicity structure. Our data are consistent with a pure helicity 2 contribution and we derive an upper limit for the ratioΓγγ(0)/Γγγ. The absence of events in the mass region around 1.3 GeV clearly proves destructivef2−a2 interference and allows to measure the relative phases betweenf2,a2 andf2′. Upper limits on the production of the glueball candidate statesf2(1720) andX(2230) as well as theKS0KS0-continuum are given.

A tagged photon beam (2.8<Eγ<4.8 GeV) and multiparticle spectrometer have been used to study the photoproduction in hydrogen ofK+Λ(1520). Precise values for the mass and width of the Λ(1520) are given. The total cross-section is found to fall with increasing photon energy like (6.5±0.7)Eγ−(2.1±0.2) μb. The differential cross sectiondσ/dt indicates peripheral forward production and exhibits no evidence for shrinkage when compared with higher energy data. The Λ(1520) spin density matrix shows thatK exchange alone cannot account for the production mechanism. The reaction is found to resemble the process γp→K+ Λ(1115) in all measurable respects.
FITTED CROSS SECTION ENERGY DEPENDENCE IS SIG = (6.7 +- 0.7 MUB*GEV**2) * P**(-2.1 +- 0.2), INCLUDING HIGHER ENERGY DATA.
EXPONENTIAL SLOPE IS 6.1 +- 2.0 GEV**-2 FOR -T = 0.2 TO 0.7 GEV**2.

We present differential cross sections andΔ++ spin density matrix elements for the photoproduction processγp→π−Δ++ and differential cross sections for the processγp→π+Δ0. The incident photon energy dependence is studied and a comparison is made with previous experiments and with the predictions of a theoretical model.

In the reaction γγ→KS0KS0 resonance production of thef2− is observed. For the radiative with\(\Gamma _{\gamma \gamma } .B(f'_2\to K\bar K) = 0.11_{ - 0.02}^{ + 0.03}\pm 0.02keV\) is found. The small number of events in thef2,a2 mass region is consistent with the assumption of destructivef2−a2 interference. From the mass distribution we determine the relative phases between the tensor mesons. Upper limits on the radiative widths of the glueball candidatesf2(1720) andX (2220) are derived.
