We report on a measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections for W and Z boson production as a function of transverse momentum in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. This measurement uses data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994-1995. It represents the first investigation of a proposal that ratios between W and Z observables can be calculated reliably using perturbative QCD, even when the individual observables are not. Using the ratio of differential cross sections reduces both experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and can therefore provide smaller overall uncertainties in the measured mass and width of the W boson than current methods used at hadron colliders.

The measured ratios of W+-/Z0 cross sections, corrected for the branching ratios BR(W-->e-nue)=0.1073+-0.0025 and BR(Z0-->E+E-)=0.033632+-0.000059 (PDG 2000). The error given is the total error, but note that the 4.3pct error in the luminosity cancels completely in the ratio.

The analyzing power AN in inclusive π0 production has been measured with use of the new 185-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. We obtain the value AN=0.10±0.03 for π0's in the kinematic region 0.2<xF<0.8 and 0.3<pT<1.2 GeV/c. In certain models of particle production this suggests that the spin of the proton is carried by its valence quarks.

A-dependence of Muon Pair Production in $\pi^-$ Nucleus Interactions at 280-{GeV}/$c$

We have measured the relative cross sections for muon pair production by 280 GeV/ c negative pions on three different targets: carbon, copper, and tungsten. The value of α obtained from the parametrization σ = constant × A α is 0.94 ± 0.02 ± 0.02, whereas the parametrization σ≈σ 0 ( Z A ) A α′ , where σ 0 ( Z A ) is given by the Drell-Yan model, leads to α ′ = 0.97 ±0.02±0.02. This last result is in agreement with the quark additivity rule which is inherent in the Drell-Yan model, no dependence is observed on the transverse momentum of the muon pair.

A single-spin asymmetry in the inclusive π 0 production at small x F was measured. In the experiment 40 GeV/c π − mesons were incident on transversely polarized protons and deutrons. An asymmetry of (40–50)% has been revealed in the hard scattering region.

Nuclear Effects on the Nucleon Structure Functions in Hadronic High Mass Dimuon Production

We compare the differential cross sections of high-mass muon pair production on deuterium and tungsten by incident negative pions of 140 and 286 GeV. We find an indication of a nuclear effect on the nucleon quark distributions comparable in magnitude to what is observed in muon-iron deep inelastic scattering, whereas the pion-quark distribution is unaffected, compatibly with QCD factorization.

We have searched for a neutral $H$ dibaryon decaying via $H\rightarrow\Lambda n$ and $H\rightarrow\Sigma~0 n$. Our search has yielded two candidate events from which we set an upper limit on the $H$ production cross section. Normalizing to the inclusive $\Lambda$ production cross section, we find $(d\sigma_H/d\Omega)\,/\,(d\sigma_\Lambda/d\Omega) < 6.3\times 10~{-6}$ at 90\% C.L., for an $H$ of mass $\approx$\,2.15GeV/$c~2$.

Hadronic production of Lambda/c from 600-GeV/c pi-, Sigma- and p beams.

We present data from Fermilab experiment E781 (SELEX) on the hadroproduction asymmetry for anti-Lambda_c compared to Lambda_c+ as a function of xF and pt2 distributions for Lambda_c+. These data were measured in the same apparatus using incident pi-, sigma- beams at 600 GeV/c and proton beam at 540 GeV/c. The asymmetry is studied as a function of xF. In the forward hemisphere with xF >= 0.2 both baryon beams exhibit very strong preference for producing charm baryons rather than charm antibaryons, while the pion beam asymmetry is much smaller. In this energy regime the results show that beam fragments play a major role in the kinematics of Lambda_c formation, as suggested by the leading quark picture.
