Using the internal beam of DESY elastic electron-proton cross-sections were measured at various angles between 32° and 130°, and with momentum transfers ofq 2=39, 60, 80 and 110 fm−2. Two single-quadrupole spectrometers, movable around a common liquid-hydrogen target, were used for analysing the momentum of the scattered electrons. Čerenkov and shower counters discriminated against pion and low-energy background. As a cross-section reference, recoil protons from elastic scattering atq 2=10 fm−2 were used, with a quantameter serving as an intermediate monitor. The data are consistent with the Rosenbluth formula, giving real form factorsG E andG M . Both continue to decrease with increasing momentum transfer, but somewhat faster than indicated by measurements performed so far.

We report a study of 20 exclusive reactions measured at the AGS at 5.9 GeV/c incident momentum, 90° center of mass. This experiment confirms the strong quark flow dependence of two-body hadron-hadron scattering at large angle. At 9.9 GeV/c an upper limit had been set for the ratio of cross sections for (p¯p→p¯p)(pp→pp) at 90° c.m., with the ratio less than 4%. The present experiment was performed at lower energy to gain sensitivity, but was still within the fixed angle scaling region. A ratio R(p¯ppp)≈140 was measured at 5.9 GeV/c, 90° c.m. in comparison to a ratio near 1.7 for small angle scattering. In addition, many other reactions were measured, often for the first time at 90° c.m. in the scaling region, using beams of π±, K±, p, and p¯ on a hydrogen target. There are similar large differences in cross sections for other reactions: R(K−p→π+Σ−K−p→π−Σ+)≈112, for example. The relative magnitudes of the different cross sections are consistent with the dominance of quark interchange in these 90° reactions, and indicate that pure gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams are much less important. The angular dependence of several elastic cross sections and the energy dependence at a fixed angle of many of the reactions are also presented.

The cross section for the production of π+π− or K+K− pairs in γγ interactions is measured for mππ between 1.7 and 3.5 GeV/c2 and for two intervals of γγ center-of-mass scattering angle. Results are compared with predictions of a QCD model.

Cross sections for ρ0 electroproduction measured in a streamer-chamber experiment are separated into elastic (ep→epρ0) and inelastic production channels. For the elastic channel, the total cross section and t dependence are presented. For the inelastic channel (1σ)dσdz, (1σ)dσdpT2, and a density matrix element are shown and compared to quark-parton-model predictions. The ratio of ρ0 to direct π0 production is found to be 2.0±0.5±0.3, where the first error is statistical, and the second error is systematic.

The differential cross sections for γp→γp and γp→π0p have been measured for incident photon energies in the range of 2 to 6 GeV and for |t| ranging from 0.7 to 4.3 GeV2. This corresponds to a center-of-mass angle range of 45° to 128°. The energy dependence of the data is compared to that predicted by several parton models.

The differential cross section of the reaction ( γ p → p φ ) has been measured in the t range 0 ⩽ t ⩽ 0.4 GeV 2 and for photon energies from 3.0 to 6.7 GeV. In particular for the small t region the measurement accuracy was better than 10%. We obtained for the slope parameter B in an exponential parametrization of the differential cross section d σ /d t = A e − Bt values of B ⋍ 6 ± 0.5 GeV −2 which are significantly larger than the slopes obtained by most other experiments at higher t values. This indicates a t dependence of B particularly in the small t region.

We have measured π±p and pp elastic differential cross sections in the range |cosθc.m.|<0.35 for incident momenta from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c for π−p and pp and from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c for π+p. We find that the fixed-c.m.-angle πp differential cross sections cannot be described as simple functions of s. The data are compared to the energy and angular dependence predicted by the constituent model of Gunion, Brodsky, and Blankenbecler.

Measurement of the exotic exchange reaction π − p → K + Σ − has been performed at 5 and 8 GeV, in the −0.015 to −0.13 and −0.009 to −0.15 (GeV/ c ) 2 range of t repectively. We give the value near t = 0 of the differential cross section at 5 GeV, 21 −21 +76 nb/(GeV/ c ) 2 , and an upper limit (< 37 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 ) at 8 GeV. As a check the measured differential cross section is given at both energies for the reaction π + p → K + Σ + in the same range of t ★★ ★★ Results presented here were included in the thesis of Doctorat d′Etat by M.N. A sample of 1200 ϕ mesons produced in the Zweig-rule-forbidden reactions π±N→ϕN shows a flat t distribution (slope=1.7 ± 0.2 GeV−2) and a cross section suppressed by 0.0032±0.0004 relative to π−p→ωn. Natural-parity-exchange ω and ϕ production have similar t dependences, while ω and ϕ production by unnatural-parity exchange differ markedly. Interference between the ϕ and the underlying K¯K S wave indicates substantial nucleon-spin incoherence between the amplitudes for ϕ and S-wave production.
