Baryon resonance production in quasi-two-body reactions has been studied for the channels K + p→K°p π + , K + n π + and K + p π ° at beam momenta of 2.53, 2.76 and 3.20 GeV/ c . The production cross sections, four-momentum transfer distributions and density matrix elements are given for the Δ(1236), N ∗ (1400), N ∗ (1500) and N ∗ (1680) states. The reaction K + p→K° Δ ++ (1236) is compared to the line reversed reaction K − n → K °Δ − and the charge-exchange SU(3) sum rule for pseudo-scalar meson plus Δ(1236) is tested.

Inspire Record 94946 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.6741

A systematic analysis is presented on the reaction K + p → K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ for nine incident momenta between 4.6–16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and vector meson single density matrix elements are given. As a function of energy, little if any change is observed in either the shapes of the differential cross sections or in the values of the density matrix elements. The data are interpreted in terms of current ideas on t -channel exchange mechanisms.

Nucl.Phys.B 81 (1974) 189-204, 1974.
Inspire Record 90237 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.32129

K + p elastic scattering is studied at incident K + beam momenta of 2.53, 2.76 and 3.20 GeV/ c . From the analysis of about 10 000 elastic events at each energy, we present data on the forward and backward elastic scattering peaks. No structure is observed in the forward peak for − t ⩽ 2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . In addition, the statistics available from this exposure permit a measurement of the differential cross sections near 90° in the center of mass system. These results exhibit a strong energy dependence and are compared to similar results at other energies.

We present a systematic analysis of the production of K ∗+ (892) and Δ ++ (1236) resonances in the K + p → K 0 p π + reaction at 5, 8.25 and 16 GeV/ c . We have measured total cross sections, differential cross sections, density matrix elements and examined resonance production mechanisms in terms of the exchange of states with definite naturality. Some results on the reaction K + p → K ∗+ (1420) p are also given.

Results are presented concerning K − d and K − n elastic scattering at an incident momentum of 4.5 GeV/ c . The high-energy Glauber formalism has been used in analyzing the data in which the nucleon scattering amplitudes are parameterized and employing the spherical and quadrupole deuteron form factors. An impulse approximation analysis of the K − n differential scattering cross section fitted to a single exponential of the form d σ /d t ) 0 e Bt , leads to the result (d σ /d t ) 0 = 21.3 + mn ; 5.5 mb/(GeV/ c ) 2 and B = 6.9 + mn ; 0.5 (GeV/ c ) −2 . A global fit has been made to existing K + mn; N two-body scattering data at this energy in order to determine the scattering amplitudes. It was found that the K − n and K − p elastic amplitudes are dominantly imaginary with a relatively small contribution from spin-flip amplitudes. The slopes of the differential elastic cross sections for K − n and K − p are nearly equal, as are those for K + n and K + p. However, the value of the slope for K + is smaller than that for K − at this energy.

Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

Bubble Chamber Study of Photoproduction by 2.8-GeV and 4.7-GeV Polarized Photons. 1. Cross-Section Determinations and Production of rho0 and Delta++ in the Reaction gamma p --> p pi+ pi-

Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

We have measured π±p and pp elastic differential cross sections in the range |cosθc.m.|<0.35 for incident momenta from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c for π−p and pp and from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c for π+p. We find that the fixed-c.m.-angle πp differential cross sections cannot be described as simple functions of s. The data are compared to the energy and angular dependence predicted by the constituent model of Gunion, Brodsky, and Blankenbecler.

The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.
