This experiment was performed with the SLD detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Only charged tracks measured in the central drift chamber were used for the measurement of the jet production rates. The value of the strong coupling $\alpha_s (M_{Z^0})$ is determined from the production rates of jets in hadronic $Z^0$ decays in $e^+e^-$ annihilations. The relative jet rates are obtained using the JADE-type algorithms. The results are compared with the jet rates obtained from a new jet algorithm proposed by N. Brown et al. called the "Durham" algorithm. The data can be well described by $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^2_s)$ QCD calculations and by QCD shower model calculations. A fit of the theoretical predictions to the data taken with the SLD yields a value$\alpha_s(M_{Z^0})$ = $0.120 \pm 0.002(stat.) \pm 0.003(exp.)^{+0.011}_{-0.009}(theor.)$ The error is dominated by the theoretical uncertainties. The measurement is compared with results from other experiments and it is shown that the value obtained for $\alpha_s$ agrees well with these results and furthermore supports the evidence for the running of the strong coupling, consistent with the non-Abelian nature of QCD. The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) can deliver partially longitudinally polarized electrons to the interaction point. Jet production rates and values for a, are calculated both for right-handed and left-handed initial state electrons. All results are consistent with the unpolarized result, as predicted by the Standard Model.

The hadronic final state in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation at c.m. energies of 13, 17 and 27.4 GeV

Results on the hadronic final state in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 13, 17 and 27.4 GeV are presented. There is no compelling evidence for the existence of the t quark in these data, which are in general agreement with a simple quark parton model. Some tentative indications of QCD effects are observed in the p/sub T//sup 2/ distributions.

We have analyzed 1113 events of the reaction e + e − → hadrons at CM energies of 12 and 30 GeV in order to make a detailed comparison with QCD. Perturbative effects can be well separated from effects depending on the quark and gluon fragmentation parameters to yield a reliable measurement of the coupling constant α S . At 30 GeV, the result is α S = 0.17 ± 0.02 (statistical) ± 0.03 (systematic). QCD model predictions, using the fragmentation parameters determined along with α S , agree with both gross properties of the final states and with detailed features of the three-jet states.

Properties of Hadron Final States in e+ e- Annihilation at 13-GeV and 17-GeV Center-Of-Mass Energies

We have observed e + e − hadrons at C.M. energies of 13 GeV and 17 GeV at PETRA using the TASSO detector. We find R (13 GeV) = 5.6 ± 0.7 and R (17 GeV) = 4.0 ± 0.7. The additional systematic uncertainty is 20%. Comparing inclusive charged hadron spectra we observe scaling between 5 GeV and 17 GeV for x = p / p beam > 0.2; however the 13 GeV cross section is above the 17 GeV cross section for smaller x . This may be due to copious bb̄ production. The events become increasingly jet like at high energies as evidenced by a shrinking sphericity distribution with increasing energy.

Measurement of the Relative Total Hadronic Cross-section R at {PETRA}

Phys.Rev.Lett. 42 (1979) 1113, 1979.

We report the first measurement of the ratio R=(σe+e−→hadrons)(σe+e−→μ+μ−) (with negligible τ-lepton contribution) at a center-of-mass energy s=13 GeV and s=17 GeV, from the just finished electron-positron colliding-beam facility PETRA. The detector, MARK-J, has an approximately 4π solid angle and measures γ, e, μ, and charged and neutral hadrons simultaneously. Our results yield R(s=17 GeV)=4.9±0.6 (statistical) ±0.7 (systematic error), and R(s=13 GeV)=4.6±0.5 (statistical) ±0.7 (systematic error). The ratio R(s=17 GeV)R(s=13 GeV) is 1.08±0.18.

We observe a resonancelike structure in the total cross section for hadron production by e+e− colliding beams at a mass of 4414 ± 7 MeV having a total width Γ=33±10 MeV. From the area under this resonance, we deduce the partial width to electron pairs to be Γee=440±140 eV. Further structure of comparable width is present near 4.1 GeV.

We report on the results of the study of e + e − collisions at the highest PETRA energy of √ s = 31.57 GeV, using the 4π sr, electromagnetic and calorimetric detector Mark J. Based on 88 hadron events, and an integrated luminosity of 243 nb −1 we obtain R = σ (e + e − → hadrons)/ σ (e + e − → μ + μ − ) = 4.0 ± 0.5 (statistical) ± 6 (systematic). The R value, the measured thrust distribution and average spherocity show no evidence for the production of new quark flavors.

This paper reports on the first results of the study of e+e− collisions at s=27.4 GeV and s=27.7 GeV at PETRA, using the 4π-sr electromagnetic and calorimetric detector MARK-J. We obtain an average R=σ(e+e−→hadrons)σ(e+e−→μ+μ−)=3.8±0.3 (statistical)±0.6 (systematic) and a relative R=1.0±0.2 between the two energies.
