In this paper we have investigated the properties of the D(1285) and E(1420) meson resonances using the five-body annihilation channels p p → K K πππ obtained in a large statistics experiment (28 events/μb). The analysis favours the 1 + spin-parity assignment for the D(1285) meson. The dominant decay mode of the D(1285) into K K π is found to be δ(970)π. The situation concerning the E(1420) meson remains confused although not inconsistent with previous analyses. Partial cross sections on resonance production are also presented.

The Reactions $K^- p \to$ Pseudoscalar Meson $\Lambda(1520)$ at 4.2-{GeV}/$c$

The total and differential cross sections of the reactions K − p → π 0 Λ (1520), ηΛ(1520) and η′ Λ(1520) have been measured. Prominent forward peaks are onserved in all three reactions. The first reaction shows also a backward peak. The spin density matrix elements of the Λ(1520) in this reaction are determined. For forward production the results show a remarkable alignment of the Λ(1520) corresponding to an M2 transition in the model of Stodolsky-Sakurai for 3 2 − baryon production.

Differential cross sections for the reaction π − p→ η n at 20 incident pion momenta between 724 and 2723 MeV/ c are presented. The results are compared with previous measurements. The data show clear evidence of non-zero couplings of this channel to known I = 1 2 , S = 0 baryon resonances with masses up to 2000 MeV/ c 2 .

We report on the first measurement of spin-correlation parameters in quasifree electron scattering from vector-polarized deuterium. Polarized electrons were injected into an electron storage ring at a beam energy of 720~MeV. A Siberian snake was employed to preserve longitudinal polarization at the interaction point. Vector-polarized deuterium was produced by an atomic beam source and injected into an open-ended cylindrical cell, internal to the electron storage ring. The spin correlation parameter A^V_{ed} was measured for the reaction \pol{2H}(\pol{e},e'n)p at a four-momentum transfer squared of 0.21 (GeV/c)^2 from which a value for the charge form factor of the neutron was extracted.

First data on coherent threshold \pi^0 electroproduction from the deuteron taken by the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. At a four-momentum transfer of q^2=-0.1 GeV^2/c^2 the full solid angle was covered up to a center-of-mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. By means of a Rosenbluth separation the longitudinal threshold s wave multipole and an upper limit for the transverse threshold s wave multipole could be extracted and compared to predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Differential cross-section d(SIG(PI0))/d(OMEGA) is related to electron-deuteron one by the relation as follows: d(SIG)/d(OMEGA_e)/d(E_e)/d(OMEGA) = Gamma *d(SIG)/d(OMEGA), where the virtual photon flux is give by: Gamma = (alpha/2*pi**2) * (E'/E) * (k_gamma/Q2) / (1-epsilon). Here epsilon is transverse degree of polarization of the virtual photon. See article for details.

We have found events of the form e++e−→e±+μ∓+missingenergy, in which no other charged particles or photons are detected. Most of these events are detected at or above a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV. The missing-energy and missing-momentum spectra require that at least two additional particles be produced in each event. We have no conventional explanation for these events.

Observation of eta-prime and Phi meson production very close to threshold in the p d ---> He-3 X reaction

The production of η′ (958) and φ (1020) mesons has been studied very close to threshold in the inclusive p d → 3 He X reaction. The complicated phase space acceptance problem caused by rapidly changing kinematics close to threshold has been carefully treated. The measured averaged squared amplitudes | f | 2 at threshold are 0.9 and 2.4 nb/sr for the η′ and φ meso Our results are in remarkable agreement with predictions of a two-step model, which uses existing π − p → n X data as input. However the ratio of φ to ω production seems at variance with naïve expectations based on the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule.

Reaction K- p --> Lambda eta from 1.2 to 1.7 GeV/c

Total and differential cross sections of the reaction K−p→Λη have been determined for incident K− lab momenta between 1.2 and 1.7 BeVc. No striking resonance formation in the direct channel is seen; in particular, the Y0*(2100) decays not more than 3% via the Λη channel. A prominent forward peak in the differential cross sections indicates some crossed-channel meson-exchange activity. The branching ratio Γ(η→neutrals)Γ(η→π+π−π0) is 3.6±0.6.

The reactions k- p ---> 0- 1/2+ at an incoming momentum of 4.25 gev/c

A bubble-chamber study is presented of a 10 events/μb experiment using K − mesons of 4.25 GeV/ c incident momentum. Differential and total cross sections are determined for 7 different reactions: K − p → K 0 n ( la ), → π 0 Λ ( lb ), → ηΛ ( lc ), → η′Λ ( ld ), → π − Σ ( le ), → π + Σ − ( lf ), K + Ξ − ( lg ) . The experimental characteristics in d σ /d t of each reaction are described: (la) shows a levelling off at t = 0 (GeV/ c ) 2 , a break at t = −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 and no backward events, (lb) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour and a measurable backward component with an indication of a dip at u = −0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (1c) d σ /d t shows a dip in the region between t ≈ −0.2 and −0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (ld) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour; neither this reaction nor the preceding one shows a clear evidence for backward events, (le) d σ /d t has a break at t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 ; there is a significant cross section in the backward region; (lf) and (lg) show mainly backward production. The polarization of the hyperon is measured in the reactions (lb), (lc), (ld) and (le) in the forward production peak. The statistics do not allow the detection of a definite structure in the polarization but the sign and magnitude are determined. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a dual Regge model, including the effects of absorption as elaborated recently by several authors.
