Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q 2 below 4 GeV 2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb −1 . These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep -laboratory range −1 < η jet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - θ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130–270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval −3 < η jet ( λp CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV 2 and photon fractional momenta down to x γ ∼ 10 −2 . Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured η jet and E t jet distributions.

Inspire Record 375999 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.45104

The ZEUS detector has been used to measure the proton structure functionF2. During 1993 HERA collided 26.7 GeV electrons on 820 GeV protons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.54 pb−1, representing a twenty fold increase in statistics compared to that of 1992. Results are presented for 7<Q2<104 GeV2 andx values as low as 3×10−4. The rapid rise inF2 asx decreases observed previously is now studied in greater detail and persists forQ2 values up to 500 GeV2.

Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, σelνp, inelastic diffractive production, σndνp, non-diffractive production, σdνp, as well as the total cross section, σtotνp, have been measured at an average υp center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The resulting values are σelνp = 18 ± 7 μb, σdνp = 33 ± 8 μb, σndνp = 91 ± 11 μb, and σtotνp 143 ± 17 μb, where the errors include statistical and systematic errors added in quadrature.

Two-Photon Production of Charged Pion and Kaon Pairs

A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. In particular, although the functional dependence of the measured cross section disagrees with leading order QCD at small values of the two-photon invariant mass, the data show a transition to perturbative behavior at an invariant mass of approximately 2.5 GeV/$c^2$. hardcopies with figures can be obtained by writing to to: Pam Morehouse preprint secretary Newman Lab Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853 or by sending mail to: preprints@lns62.lns.cornell.edu

The CLEO II detector is used to search for the production of χc2 states in two-photon interactions. We use the signature χc2→γJ/ψ→γl+l− with l=e,μ. Using 1.49 fb−1 of data taken with beam energies near 5.29 GeV, the two-photon width of the χc2 is determined to be Γ(χc2→γγ)=1.08±0.30(stat)±0.26(syst) keV, in agreement with predictions from perturbative QCD.

Measurement of cross-section for gamma gamma ---> p anti-p

A measurement of the cross section for γγ→pp¯ is performed at two-photon center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.25 GeV. These results are obtained using e+e−→e+e−pp¯ events selected from 1.31 fb−1 of data taken with the CLEO II detector. The measured cross section is in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and is in excellent agreement with recent calculations based on a diquark model. However, leading order QCD calculations performed using the Brodsky-Lepage formalism are well below the measured cross section.

Two measurements of B0 anti-B0 mixing

We have measured the B0B¯0 mixing probability, χd, using a sample of 965 000 BB¯ pairs from Υ(4S) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find χd=0.157±0.016±0.018−0.021+0.028. Using tagged B0 events, we find χd=0.149±0.023±0.019±0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a ±15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral B pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. We also obtain a limit on the CP impurity in the Bd0 system, ‖Re(εB0)‖<0.045 at 90% C.L.

Using the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we have observed the D s 1 (2536) + in the decay modes D s1 + →D ∗0 K + and D ∗+ K S + , and measured its fragmentation and production ratios. Using the helicity angle distribution of the daugter D ∗0 , we obtain new evidence for the assignment of 1 + for the spin and parity of the D s 1 + . We also set upper limits on the decays D s1 + →D s ∗+ λ, D 0 K + and D + K s 0 .

The production of transverse energy clusters in minimum bias proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN SPS Collider is studied with the UA1 detector over a new range of centre of mass energies (√ s = 0.2−0.9 TeV). This study is intended to investigate how low in transverse momentum perturbative QCD is able to describe the dynamics of hadron collisions. We observe that clusters with transverse energy in excess of a few GeV exhibit properties in agreement with QCD expectations for parton scattering, supporting their interpretation in terms of jet production. We find that the jet-event rate represents a sizeable fraction of the inelastic rate and is increasing with √ s over the measured energy range.
