We have measured absolute differential cross sections and analyzing powers for neutron-proton elastic scattering for momentum transfer 0.01 < | t |< 0.08 (GeV/ c ) 2 at several energies between 378 and 1135 MeV. The ionization chamber IKAR filled with methane was used as both a gas target and recoil detector. For the analyzing-power measurements the scattered neutron was detected in scintillation counters in coincidence with the recoil proton detected in IKAR. Special care was taken to ensure a precise absolute normalization of the cross sections, with overall systematic uncertainties of 4–7%.

We have measured the production polarization and magnetic moment of a sample of 89×103Ξ− hyperons produced in the inclusive reaction p(400 GeV/c)+Cu→Ξ−+X. The weighted average of the polarization is -0.070±0.008±0.010 at a pt of 0.63 GeV/c. The Ξ−'s magnetic moment yields the value μΞ=−0.661±0.036±0.036 nuclear magnetons. The first error is statistical, the second systematic.

We have mesured the polarization of 375-GeV/c Σ+ and Σ¯ − hyperons produced by 800-GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. We find that the Σ+ polarization rises with increasing pt to a maximum of 16% at pt=1.0 GeV/c and then decreases to 10% at pt=1.8 GeV/c. We compare this Σ+ polarization with data at lower energies. The Σ¯ − polarization has been measured for the first time. It has the same sign as the Σ+ but smaller magnitude in a similar kinematical region.

The analysing powers in free →n p forward elastic scattering have been measured for incident neutron energies of 633, 784, 834, 934 and 985 MeV, and for momentum transfer 0.01 < ‖ t ‖ < 0.10 ( GeV / c ) 2 . The experiment used a recoil detector ionisation chamber which served at the same time as a gas target, and scintillation counters to measure the asymmetry of the scattered neutrons.

We utilize the angle and momentum resolution of our apparatus to study the polarization of 375 GeV/c Σ+ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. By examining in detail two of our high statistics data samples, we find evidence for structure in the pt dependence of Σ+ polarization and are able to extract the xF dependence of the Σ+ polarization and compare it with xF behavior in the Λ0 and Ξ− systems.

The Michel parameters ϱ, η, ξ, and ξδ, the chirality parameter ξ h and the τ polarization P τ are measured using 32012 τ pair decays. Their values are extracted from the energy spectra of leptons and hadrons in τ − → l − ν l ν τ and τ − → π − ν τ decays, the energy and decay angular distributions in τ − → ϱ − ν τ decays, and the correlations in the energy spectra and angular distributions of the decay products. Assuming universality in leptonic and semileptonic τ decays, the results are ϱ = 0.794±0.039±0.031, η = 0.25±0.17±0.11, ξ = 0.94±0.21±0.07, ξδ = 0.81±0.14±0.06, ξ h = −0.970±0.053±0.011, and P τ = −0.154±0.018±0.012. The measurement is in agreement with the V-A hypothesis for the weak charged current.
