This Letter presents the first search for a heavy particle decaying into an e\mu final state in sqrt(s)=7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC. The data were recorded by the ATLAS detector during 2010 and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 35/pb. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed. Exclusions at 95% confidence level are placed on two representative models. In an R-parity violating supersymmetric model, tau sneutrinos with a mass below 0.75 TeV are excluded, assuming single coupling dominance and the couplings lambda'_{311}=0.11, lambda_{312}=0.07. In a lepton flavor violating model, a Z'-like vector boson with masses of 0.70 to 1.00 TeV and corresponding cross sections times branching ratios of 0.175 to 0.183 pb is excluded. These results extend to higher mass RPV sneutrinos and LFV Z's than previous constraints from the Tevatron.

A high-precision measurement of the differential cross section for Bhabha scattering (e+e−→e+e−) is presented. The measurement was performed with the MAC detector at the PEP storage ring of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. Effects due to electroweak interference are observed and agree well with the predictions of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model. The agreement between the data and the electroweak prediction rules out substructure of the electron up to mass scales of 1 TeV.
Error contains both statistics and systematics.

The CERES experiment (CErenkov Ring Electron Spectrometer) studies the production of low mass e + e − pairs in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions at the CERN SPS. The CERES spectrometer, has a novel design based on two Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) counters, and it operates close to its design specifications. Data were recorded with 200 GeV u sulfur beam and 450 GeV proton beam. The analysis is in progress. We have extracted first e + − -pairs samples for p+Be, p+Au and S+Au collisions. In addition other physics topics were addressed. Inclusive photon spectra were measured in S+Au interactions. No excess over known hadronic sources was found within our present systematic error of 11%. Results on high p i charged pion spectra are presented up to 4 GeV c . We also studied the production of e + e − -pairs m the strong electromagnetic fields of very peripheral S+Pt collisions. The data are well described by a first-order perturbative QED-calculation.

We report measurements of the proton elastic form factors, G E p and G M p , extracted from electron scattering in the range 1⩽ Q 2 ⩽3(GeV/ c ) 2 . The uncertainties are <15% in G E p and <3% in G M p . The values of G E p are larger than indicated by most theoretical parameterizations, The ratio of Pauli and Dirac form factors, Q 2 F 2 p / F 1 p , is lower and demonstrates less Q 2 dependence than most of these parameterizations. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD and vector-meson dominance.

A search for supersymmetric electron production via the reaction e+e−→e±γ̃ẽ∓ followed by the decay ẽ∓→e∓γ̃ has been performed with the MAC detector at the electron-positron storage ring PEP. No candidates were found in a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.4 pb−1. For a massless γ̃ this corresponds to a lower limit on the ẽ mass of 22.4 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

Total and differential cross sections of the reaction K−p→Λη have been determined for incident K− lab momenta between 1.2 and 1.7 BeVc. No striking resonance formation in the direct channel is seen; in particular, the Y0*(2100) decays not more than 3% via the Λη channel. A prominent forward peak in the differential cross sections indicates some crossed-channel meson-exchange activity. The branching ratio Γ(η→neutrals)Γ(η→π+π−π0) is 3.6±0.6.

In diffractive photoproduction ofηπ+π−, the two-body substatesηρ0 andA2π are found to contribute significantly to the cross-section forηπ+π− masses below 2.4 GeV. From a spin-parity analysis the branching ratio, ρ′(1600)→ηρ/ρ′(1600)→, is determined to be <0.02 at the 68.3% confidence level. TheA2π component shows an enhancement around 1.7 GeV. The spin-parity analysis indicates a probable contribution to this signal from exclusive photoproduction of theg(1690).

Using 7.3 pb-1 of ppbar collisions collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we measure the distribution of the variable \phistar, which probes the same physical effects as the Z/gamma* boson transverse momentum, but is less susceptible to the effects of experimental resolution and efficiency. A QCD prediction is found to describe the general features of the \phistar distribution, but is unable to describe its detailed shape or dependence on boson rapidity. A prediction that includes a broadening of transverse momentum for small values of the parton momentum fraction is strongly disfavored.
