D Meson Production and Decay in e+ e- Annihilation at 4.03-GeV and 4.41-GeV Center-Of-Mass Energy

Decay modes of the charmed mesons, D 0 and D + , are studied in e + e − annihilation data at 4.03 and 4.41 GeV c.m. energy. The products of cross section times branching ratio are measured for the K − π + , K − π + π + π − , K S π + π − and K − π + π + final states. Upper limits are established for the Cabibbo forbidden decays via π + π − , K + K − , K + K − π + , K + π + π − and π + π − π + . The K − π + π + π − final state is shown to be dominated by K − π + ρ 0 .

From a study of D mesons produced in the decay ψ(3772)→DD¯, we have determined the masses of the D0 and D+ mesons to be 1863.3±0.9 MeV/c2 and 1868.3±0.9 MeV/c2, respectively. Under the assumption that the ψ(3772) has a definite isospin and decays only to DD¯, the D0 branching fractions to K−π+, K¯0π+π−, and K−π+π−π+ are (2.2±0.6)%, (4.0 ± 1.3)%, and (3.2±1.1)% and the D+ branching fractions to K¯0π+ and K−π+π+ are (1.5±0.6)% and (3.9±1.0)%.

Inclusive momentum and energy spectra of neutral and charged D-mesons produced in e + e − annihilation at energies near 7 GeV are presented. The slope of the energy spectrum is similar to the charged pion spectrum at the same energy. The inclusive cross section σ(e + e − → D or D + anything) at 7 GeV is 4.8±1.3 nb.

We present measurements of the cross section for inclusive D and K meson production in e + e − annihilation in the center of mass energy range 3.6 to 5.8 GeV. D production accounts for most of the increase in the total cross section for hadron production in e + e − annihilation at energies above 4 GeV.

Evidence is presented for inclusive photoproduction of F ± mesons in three decay modes, ηπ ± , ηπ ± π + π − and ηπ ± π + π + π − π − . The average mass of the F ± is found to be 2.020±0.010 GeV.

A measurement is presented of inclusive charged D*(2010) production from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy (W) range 10.2 GeV<W<10.6 GeV. Charged D* mesons are identified by the decays D*+→D0π+→K−π+π+ and the charge conjugate mode. It is found that 40 ± 7 ± 13% of the charm quarks from the process e+e−→cc¯ result in D* mesons with z>0.7 (z=2EW, where E is the D* energy).

Inclusive production of (D0, D¯0) and D± mesons have been observed in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV. The signals correspond to R values of R(D0+D¯0)=3.25±1.2 and R(D++D−)=1.35±0.6. D*± production is also observed via the process D*+→D0π+ and its charge conjugate. The D and D* production rates are compared.

D*+- Production by e+ e- Annihilation Near 34.4-GeV Center-Of-Mass Energy

D ∗± production via e + e − →D ∗± X has been measured at an average CM energy of 34.4 GeV. The D ∗± energy spectrum is hard, with a maximum near χ = 0.6. The size of the D ∗ cross section, R D ∗ = σ( e + e − → D ∗ X ) σ μμ = 2.50 ± 0.64 ± 0.88 (assuming R D ∗0 = R D ∗+ ) indicates that a large fraction of charm quark production yields D ∗ mesons. The D ∗± angular distribution exhibits a forward—backward asymmetry, A = −0.28 ± 0.13. This is consistent with that expected in the standard theory for weak neutral currents and leads to | g A c | = 0.89 ± 0.44 for the axial vector coupling of the charm quark.
