The Production and Decay of Tau Leptons in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at {PETRA} Energies

We have observed τ pair production at average CM energies of 13.9, 22.3, 34.5 and 43.1 GeV. The cross-sections are consistent with QED, the cut off parameters beingΛ+>161 GeV andΛ−169 GeV (95% CL). The topological branching fraction of the τ to 1 charged particle,B1, is 0.847±0.011 (stat)−0.013+0.016(syst) and no decays to 5 charged particles were observed resulting inB5<0.007 (95% CL). Within the 3 charged track final stateB(τ−→π−π+π−v)/(B(τ−→π−π+π−v)+B(τ−→π−π+π−π0v))=0.37−0.20+0.35

A Detailed Study of Strange Particle Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at High-energy

Results onK0 and Λ production ine+e− annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and Λ differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of π±,K± and$p(\bar p)$. Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh=σ(e+e-→hX)/σµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 Λ per event. We have searched for possible Λ polarization. The production ofK0's and Λ's in jets is examined as a function ofpT2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons$(\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,por\bar p)$ observed.

New Results on $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ From the Jade Detector at {PETRA}

The production of collinear muon pairs has been studied using the JADE detector at thee+e− storage ring at PETRA. Results for the total cross section and the angular distribution were obtained at centre of mass (cm) energies ranging from 12 to 46 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity offLdt>90 pb−1, of which 71.2 pb−1 were taken at$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle $=34.4 GeV and 17 pb−1 at$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle $=42.4 GeV. The results are compared to electroweak theories, in particular the “Standard Model”.

Measurements of Energy Correlations in $e^+ e^- \to$ Hadrons

Energy-energy-correlations (EEC) have been measured with the JADE detector at c.m. energies of 14 GeV, 22 GeV and in the region 29 GeV<Ecm<36 GeV. Corrected results are presented of EEC and their asymmetry, which can be directly compared to theoretical predictions. At 〈Ecm〉=34 GeV a comparison with second order QCD predictions yields good agreement for the string model fragmentation resulting in a value of the strong coupling constant αs=0.165±0.01 (stat.). The independent fragmentation models, which yield values of αs between 0.10 and 0.15 depending on the treatment of energy and momentum conservation and of the gluon splitting, do not provide a satisfactory description of the data over the full angular range.

Large Momentum Transfer Elastic Scattering of $\pi^{\pm}, K^{\pm}$, and $\rho^{\pm}$ on Protons at 100 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c

Results are presented on π±p, K±p, and p±p elastic scattering measured with an apparatus having acceptance of 0.5<−t<2.5 (GeV/c)2 and 0.9<−t<11 (GeV/c)2 at 100 and 200 GeV/c, respectively. A diffractionlike dip is seen for the first time in the π−p t distribution at −t=4 (GeV/c)2. All meson-proton cross sections are found to be similar in the range 1<−t<2.5 (GeV/c)2, although some small systematic differences are observed. Cross sections for pp and p―p are compared with previous data.

STUDY OF THE LOW MASS DIMUON CONTINUUM PRODUCED IN HADRONIC INTERACTIONS

We present here the analysis of low mass dimuon events (1.8 < M μμ < 2.6 GeV / c 2 ) produced by positive and negative pion and proton beams at 200 GeV / c . Using the difference between the π - and the π + cross sections, and comparing to the Drell-Yan model, we find a K -factor of 2.47 ± 0.5. Only about 1 2 of the events can be attributed to the Drell-Yan mechanism. If the remaining events are attributed to muonic decays of D mesons we findan upper limit for the cross section of charmed meson production.

Evidence for Local Compensation of Baryon Number in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

We have studied at CM energies of 14, 22 and 30–36.7 GeV e + e − annihilation events in which the hadronic final state contains both a proton and an antiproton in the momentum range 1.0 < p < GeV/ c . We find that such pairs are produced predominantly in the same jet and conclude that baryon-antibaryon production is dominated by a mechanism involving local compensation of baryon number.
