Polarization and differential cross-section data for elastic scattering of positive pions on protons between 0.82 and 2.74 GeV/ c are presented. A dip in the polarization, at constant u ≈ −0.65 GeV 2 , is observed. The data are compared with published phase-shift analyses.

Experimental Evidence for Structures in the Momentum Dependence of the n + p --> p + n Charge-Exchange Peak Between 1-GeV/c and 2-GeV/c

21 differential cross section measurements of the np → pn charge-exchange reaction have been carried out at the synchrotron Saturne (Saclay), for incident neutron momenta between 1 and 2 GeV/ c and in the squared four-momentum transfer range 0 ⩽ −t ⩽ 0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The π exchange peak is seen at all the incident momenta. The s dependence of the very forward slope of this peak shows weak structures near the threshold of inelastic channels.

Measurement of the Real Part of the K- n Forward Scattering Amplitude Between 1.2-GeV/c and 2.6-GeV/c

The differential cross sections of the combined elastic and break-up K − d reaction have been measured at 1.21, 1.42 and 2.61 GeV/ c incident K − momentum. The measurements have been performed at the CERN PS using multiwire proportional chambers. The values of the invariant momentum transfer t explored (0.0005<| t |<0.1 GeV 2 ) include the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The differential cross sections have been analysed in the framework of the Glauber impact-parameter formalism. The observed interference effects have been used to derive the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward K − n nuclear amplitude.

A Measurement of the Energy Dependence of Elastic $\pi p$ and $p p$ Scattering at Large Angles

We have measured π±p and pp elastic differential cross sections in the range |cosθc.m.|<0.35 for incident momenta from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c for π−p and pp and from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c for π+p. We find that the fixed-c.m.-angle πp differential cross sections cannot be described as simple functions of s. The data are compared to the energy and angular dependence predicted by the constituent model of Gunion, Brodsky, and Blankenbecler.

EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF ANTI-P P INTERACTIONS BETWEEN 0-GEV AND 1.2-GEV/C: EVIDENCE FOR A ANTI-P P ---> 5 PI EFFECT NEAR 1950-MEV/C**2

An experimental analysis of p p interactions between the p p threshold (√ s = 1878 MeV) and √ s = 2 100 MeV leads to clear evidence for an s -channel effect in the reaction p p → π + π − π + π − π 0 at 1949 ± 10 MeV /c 2 (Γ ⋍ 80 MeV /c 2 ) . A comparison is made with the backward elastic scattering and charge-exchange behaviour. An interpretation in terms of an object strongly coupled to mesonic decay modes, with small or middle-sized elasticity ( x ⩽ 0.135 −0.06 +0.13 ) is given. No significant narrow structure is observed in the backward elastic scattering between 1.9 and 2 GeV. The experimental resolution of √ s in this case is 2 MeV.

Measurement of the $p p$ Cross-sections in the Momentum Range 0.9-2.0 GeV/c

The pp total, elastic, and all the inelastic cross sections were measured at 11 momenta in the range 0.9–2.0 GeV/c. No clear structure was observed in their momentum dependences. The momentum dependence of the total cross section agrees quite well with the result of a phase-shift analysis by Arndt. Our measurement of the ppπ 0 and pnπ + cross sections served to normalize the earlier systematic but relative and extrapolated measurements of these cross sections over a narrower momentum range. Calculations by König and Kroll based on a pion exchange model including the effect of an I = 1 dibaryon did not fit the single-pion production cross sections.

Study of $p p$ Interactions in the Momentum Range 0.9-{GeV}/$c$ to 2.0-{GeV}/$c$

pp interactions at 11 momenta in the range 0.9 to 2.0 GeV/ c have been studied. The elastic angular distributions, covering the c.m. angular range 22°–90°, agree in general with Hoshizaki's phase-shift analysis which shows the looping 1 D in and 3 F 3 amplitudes in the Argand diagram. About 80% of pn π + events come from the n Δ ++ state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the density matrix elements of the Δ ++ show no momentum or angular dependence. A large fraction of pp π 0 events also come from the p Δ + state at all momenta above 1.2 GeV/ c . The behavior of the Δ + density matrix elements is similar to that for the case of Δ ++ .

The Differential Cross-section for Proton Proton Elastic Scattering at 90-degrees $c$.m. Between 300-{MeV} and 500-{MeV}

The absolute differential cross section for proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at 90° c.m. for 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500 MeV. The statistical uncertainty of the measurements is 0.5% with an additional systematic normalization uncertainty of 1.8%. The results are compared to phase-shift analyses.

The depolarization parameter D NN for pp elastic scattering at θ cm = 90 ° has been measured at twelve momenta between 0.9 and 1.5 GeV/ c . The moduli of the three transversity amplitudes T 1 , T 3 , and T 4 have been extracted from these data and from previous measurements of the differential cross section and spin correlation parameter A NN (90 °). Smooth energy dependence is found for all three amplitude moduli.
