We present inclusive ϱ ±,0 and ω cross sections in the beam fragmentation region of π + p interactions at 250 GeV/ c . The near equality of the ϱ + and ϱ 0 cross sections implies suppression of valence quark recombination in forward vector meson production.

Compensation of transverse momentum is studied in π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. SignificantpT-transfer is found between c.m.s. hemispheres. With respect to the beam axis transverse momentum is compensated over the whole event, with respect to the sphericity axis mainly within one hemisphere. The highestpT in the event is mainly compensated by increased multiplicity. The QGSM and FRITIOF models qualitatively reproduce these effects, but important differences are observed.
Mean value of total transverse VECTOR defined as sum over all charged particles in the forward or backward hemispheres was measured.

Average numbers of ϱ 0 , K ∗0 (890) and K ∗0 (890) produced in peripheral collisions (with the number of “grey” protons n g ⩽2) of K + with Al and of π + with Al and Au nuclei at 250 GeV/ c are measured in the EHS(NA22) experiment at the CERN SPS. No evidence is found for suppression of vector meson production relative to K + p and π + collisions at the same energy.

A sample of 8000 interactions of 250 GeV/c π+ andK+ mesons on Al and Au nuclei, is used to search for intermittency effects by calculating the normalized factorial moments of order two to four. No significant effect is observed in the higher moments. Two-body rapidity correlations and Bose-Einstein correlations in these interactions are presented.

Inclusive data are presented on ϱ 0 ,ϱ + and ω produced in k + p interactions at 250 GeV/ c , for ϱ + and ω for the first time in K + p experiment. In the forward CM hemisphere, the ϱ + , ϱ 0 and ω differential production rates are equal within errors, and remarkably similar to muon-inelastic scattering data on ϱ 0 and ω at 280 GeV/ c .

An analysis of theA-dependence of the target-diffractive cross-section is presented. Data on thet-dependence of the cross section are fitted in the usual exponential form. The mean multiplicity of negative particles produced diffractively is found not to be sensitive to the nuclear mass. TheA-dependence of the emitted proton multiplicity and the angular distributions of the produced charged particles suggest re-scattering of the emitted particles on other nucleons of the nucleus. All these facts are compared with results obtained by Monte-Carlo simulation according to a two-component Dual Parton Model.

Multiplicities for the diffractive system.
An analysis is presented of the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions and of the nuclear stopping power in collisions ofπ+ andK+ mesons with Al and Au nuclei at 250 GeV/c. The experimental results are compared to predictions of the additive quark model and the dual parton model. The AQM offers an overall consistent description of the data in this experiment. The DPM reproduces reasonably well the rapidity spectra in the central and projectile fragmentation regions, but fails to describe the nuclear stopping power.

We present data on the production of the baryons Λ,\(\bar \Lambda \),p and of the baryon resonances Σ*+ (1385) and Δ++ (1232) inK+p and π+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Results are given on total and semi-inclusive cross sections, Feynman-x spectra, transverse momentum distributions and Λ polarization. The data are compared with measurements at lower energies, with deep inclastic lepton nucleon data and with predictions of quark-parton models. The models underestimate Λ production in the central c.m. region, a feature also seen in recent heavy-ion data. This failure can be cured in JETSET 6.3 by adjustment of the di-quark break-up probability.

Multiplicity distributions, observed inK+ interactions with Al and Au nuclei at 250 GeV/c incident momentum are presented. They are analyzed in the framework of multiple collisions of the incident particle inside a nucleus. The probability distribution of the number of grey tracks is well described by the model of Andersson et al., if a negative binomial distribution is assumed for the distribution of the number of grey protons produced per elementary collision instead of the usual geometrical distribution. The analysis of the average and dispersion of the charge multiplicity distribution supports the validity of the multiple collision model, including results on correlations between forward and backward multiplicities.
