The process e+ e- -> e+ e- Z/gamma* is studied with the OPAL detector at LEP at a centre of mass energy of sqrt(s) = 189 GeV. The cross-section times the branching ratio of the Z/gamma* decaying into hadrons is measured within Lorentz invariant kinematic limits to be (1.2 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.1) pb for invariant masses of the hadronic system between 5 GeV and 60 GeV and (0.7 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.1) pb for hadronic masses above 60 GeV. The differential cross-sections of the Mandelstam variables s-hat, t-hat, and u-hat are measured and compared with the predictions from the Monte Carlo generators grc4f and PYTHIA. From this, based on a factorisation ansatz, the total and differential cross-sections for the subprocess e gamma -> e Z/gamma* are derived.

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.

The reactionsπ−p→K0(890) Λ,K0(890)Σ0 andK0(890)Σ0 are studied at an incident momentum of 3.95 GeV/c using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to ∼90 events/μb. The differential cross sections, density matrix elements of the vector meson and hyperon polarizations are presented. A transversity amplitude analysis is performed for each of the reactions. The results are compared with those obtained for the SU(3) related processesK−p→ϕΔ, ϕΣ0, ϕΣ0(1385) andϱ−Σ+(1385) and with predictions of the additive quark model and SU(6) sum rules.

The reactions K − p → Ξ 0 − (1320) K 0 + , Ξ − (1320) K + (890), Ξ 0 − (1530) K 0 − and Ξ 0 − (1530) K 0 + (890) are studied at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The data come from a high-statistics bubble chamber experiment with a sensitivity of ∼ 133 events/ μ b. Total anddifferential cross sections are presented. The results are compared to the SU(3)-related processes K + p → pK + and K + p → pK + (890) in the backward hemisphere. Final states produced by charged baryon exchange in π − p interactions at 12 GeV/ c laboratory momentum have been studied. Forward neutrons with momenta determined by a calorimeter to be greater than 8.5 ± 1.4 GeV/ c triggered the SLAC 40-inch hydrogen bubble chamber which operated at a 10 Hz expansion rate. We report data on the reactions π − p→n π − π + , π − p→n π − π + π 0 , and π − p→n π − π − π + π + . In π − n π − p→n π + , production of ϱ and f mesons is observed. Differential cross sections are derived and compared with data at lower incident momentum and with theoretical models. In π − p→n π − π + π 0 , ω production is observed with a differential cross section having a deep near u ′= 0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 . In π − p→n π − π − π + π + , Δ − , ϱ and f production is observed . The observed mass distributions appear to indicate the production of wide resonaces decaying into ϱππ. Some evidence for ϱ-ω interference is also observed.

In a high statistics CERN 2 m bubble chamber experiment the differential cross sections and polarizations of the Λ for the reactions K − p → Λπ 0 , Λη , Λη ′ at 4.2 GeV/ c have been measured. The reaction K − p → Λη exhibits a pronounced dip around − t ∼0.5 ( GeV / c ) 2 and all three reactions show a significant backward peaking (− u < 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 ). The Λ polarization in the reaction K − p → Λπ 0 is measured to be significantly different from zero throughout most of the available t -range. Forward cross sections enable a determination of R T , the ratio of singlet/octet coupling η 1 KK ∗∗ η 8 KK ∗∗ . Backward cross sections are utilized to estimate the effective η-nucleon coupling constant g η NN 2 over the − u range 0–1.5 ( GeV /c) 2 .

n−p elastic differential cross sections in the charge-exchange region have been measured for incident neutron momenta between 600 and 2000 MeV/c. The momentum of neutrons incident on a liquid-H2 target was determined by a measurement of flight time over a 32.9-m flight path. The momentum and scattering angles of the recoil proton were measured by a wire-spark-chamber magnetic spectrometer. Approximately 450 000 elastic events were detected for proton laboratory angles between 0° and 62°. Differential cross sections are presented at 16 energies. An absolute normalization of the cross sections was achieved by measuring the incident neutron flux with a detector whose efficiency was determined experimentally.
