The differential elastic scattering cross sections for negative pions on ; protons were measured at incident momenta of 1.51, 2.01, and 2.53 Bev/c with ; emphasis on the angular region outside the diffraction peak. The purpose of the ; experiment was to examine the behavior of the largeangle differential elastic ; cross section as a function of energy from the energy of the highest known ; resonance in the pion-nucleon system into the region where the total. cross ; sections appear to be approaching an asymptotic value. The experiment was ; performed at the Bevatron, using a luminescent chamber system to photograph the ; tracks of the scattered pion and the recoil proton from a liquid hydrogen target. ; A total of 2412 elastic scatterings were analyzed at 1.51 Bev/c, 1300 events at ; 2.01 Bev/c, and 1080 events at 2.53 Bev/c. From the existing data it may be ; noted that the backward bump, which has a maximum height of 2.1 mb/sr at 900 Mev ; and 1.1 mb/sr at 1020 Mev, is down to 0.4 mb/sr at 1.51 Bev/c (1.37 Bev), and is ; not present at 2.01 or 2.53 Bev/c. The angular distributions behind the ; diffraction peak at 2.01 and 2.53 Bev/c are rougly constant, decreasing from 0.18 ; mb/sr at 2.01 Bev/c to 0.125 mb/sr at 2.53 Bev/c. Although the data can be taken ; to suggest some oscillatory structure in this region, they are not inconsistent ; with an isotropic distribution that might be interpreted as evidence for an S-; wave scattering behind the diffraction peak. We measured elastic-scattering angular distributions for π++p scattering at 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 BeV/c using spark chambers to detect scattered pions and protons. A bump that decreases in amplitude with increasing momentum is observed in the backward hemisphere in the 1.5- and 2.0-BeV/c distributions, but is not observed in the 2.5-BeV/c distributions. It appears reasonable to attribute this phenomenon to the 1.45-BeV/c resonance observed in the π++p total cross section. The data are compared with π−+p data and are found to support the theoretical prediction that the scattering cross sections for both charge states should become equal at high energies. We fit the angular distributions with a power series in cosθ*, and compare the extrapolated values for the scattering cross section in the backward direction with the calculation of the neutron-exchange pole contribution to the cross section. The "elementary" neutron-pole term contribution is calculated to be 90 mb/sr at 2.0 BeV/c, in violent disagreement with the extrapolated value, ≈0.5 mb/sr.

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of positive pi mesons by protons were measured at the Berkeley Bevatron at pion laboratory kinetic energies between 500 and 1600 MeV. Fifty scintillation counters and a matrix coincidence system were used to identify incoming pions and detect the recoil proton and pion companions. Results were fitted with a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass scattering angle, and total elastic cross sections were obtained by integrating under the fitted curves. The coefficients of the cosine series are displayed, plotted versus the laboratory kinetic energy of the pion. The most striking features of these curves are the large positive value of the coefficient of cos6θ*, and the large negative value of the coefficient of cos4θ*, both of which maximize in the vicinity of the 1350-MeV peak in the total cross section. These results indicate that the most predominant state contributing to the scattering at the 1350-MeV peak has total angular momentum J=72, since the coefficients for terms above cos6θ* are negligible at this energy. One possible explanation is that the 1350-MeV peak is the result of an F72 resonance lying on the same Regge-pole trajectory as the (32, 32) resonance near 195 MeV.

Angular distributions of recoil-proton polarization in elastic π±p scattering were measured at 864-, 981-, and 1301-MeV incident pion kinetic energy. Polarization measurements were made by observing the azimuthal asymmetry in the subsequent scattering of recoil protons in large carbon-plate spark chambers. The spark chambers proved to be very suitable polarization analyzer detectors. Strong variation of the polarization with backward pion scattering angle was observed.

Differential cross sections for the reaction π−p→π0n were measured at nine incident-pion kinetic energies in the interval from 500 to 1300 MeV. The negative pion beam from the bevatron was focused on a liquidhydrogen target completely surrounded by a cubic array of six steel-plate spark chambers. The spark chambers were triggered on events with neutral final states. Charge-exchange events were identified from the one-shower and two-shower events in the spark-chamber pictures. By the Monte Carlo technique, the π0 distributions were calculated from the bisector distributions of the two-shower π0 events together with the observed γ-ray distributions of the one-shower π0 events. These π0 distributions were fitted with both Legendre-polynomial expansions and power-series expansions by the method of least squares. The extrapolated forward differential cross sections are in good agreement with the dispersion calculations. The Legendre coefficients for the differential cross sections in isospin state T=12 were obtained by combining our results with available data on π±p elastic scattering. In the light of existing phase-shift solutions, the behavior of these coefficients is discussed. The D5F5 interference term that peaks near 900 MeV is verified to be in isospin state T=12 only. We report here also the total neutral cross sections and the cross sections for the production of neutral multipion final states 2π0n and 3π0n. The 4π solid angle and the calibrated energy response of the spark chambers contribute to the accuracy of the results.

Total cross sections of π+ and π− mesons on protons and deuterons have been measured in a transmission experiment to relative accuracies of ±0.2% over the laboratory momentum range 0.46-2.67 GeV/c. The systematic error is estimated to be about ±0.5% over most of the range, increasing to about ±2% near both ends. Data have been obtained at momentum intervals of 25-50 MeV/c with a momentum resolution of ±0.6%. No new structure is observed in the π±p total cross sections, but results differ in several details from previous experiments. From 1-2 GeV/c, where systematic erros are the smallest, the total cross section of π− mesons on deuterons is found to be consistently higher than that of π+ mesons by (1.3±0.3)%; about half of this difference may be understood in terms of Coulomb-barrier effects. The πd and πN total cross sections are used to check the validity of the Glauber theory. Substantial disagreements (up to 2 mb) are observed, and the conclusion is drawn that the Glauber theory is inadequate in this momentum range.

The ratio of π− to π+ off deuterium was measured as a function of incident photon energy from 600 to 1700 MeV in the forward direction. The ratio shows a broad dip around a center-of-mass energy of 1700 MeV, resulting presumably from the collective effect of several isospin-½ resonances in this energy region. Such a change in the ratio is reflected in the rapid variation of the isoscalar photoproduction amplitude since we found the isovector photoproduction amplitude to be a relatively smooth function decreasing slowly with increasing incident photon energy.

The cross section for photoproduction of single π+ from hydrogen has been measured at laboratory angles of 110°, 127.5° and 152°, between 0.9- and 3.2-GeV incident photon energy. Measurements have been made with approximately 15% statistical accuracy at about 40 photon energies at each angle. The results agree well with the previous Caltech data of Thiessen. The cross section shows a rapid drop with increasing energy with superimposed bumps or shoulders corresponding to the N(1688), Δ(1920), and Δ(2420). A shallow minimum is observed at the N(2190) resonance.

Polarization and differential cross-section data for elastic scattering of negative kaons on polarized protons between 865 and 1330 MeV/ c are presented. Comparisons are made with predictions given by published energy dependent phase-shift analyses. The Legendre expansion coefficients characterizing the polarization distributions show remarkable structures resulting from excitation of Λ- and Σ-resonances. An analysis of the elastic and charge-exchange data in this region of momenta supports the assignments of J P = 3 2 + for the Λ(1870) resonance. Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

From the energy dependence of the p¯p and p¯n inelastic cross sections we deduce an upper limit to the resonant contribution in p¯p backward scattering for c.m. energies between 1915 and 1950 MeV. This limit is smaller than the expected contribution from diffraction scattering. The energy dependence of the 180° p¯p elastic cross section in this energy range cannot therefore be directly related to the formation of s-channel resonances.

Multihadron production by electron-positron colliding beams has been investigated for total centre-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. The total cross-section, σtot ≡ σ(e+e−→π+π−+ + anything), is of the order of σμμ ≡ σ(e+e−→μ+μ−), with a threshold near 1 GeV. Partial cross-sections for the various channels are also derived. The cross-section of the specific channel e+e−→π+π−π+π− exhibits an energy dependence which is suggestive of a heavier vector meson, ρ' (mρ,≈ 1.6 GeV,Гρ, ≈ 350 Mev), having the same quantum numbers as the ρ-meson. An upper limit is given for the coupling constantfρ′ (fρ′/4π<18, wherefρ′=mρ′2e/gγρ′). Final states withG+ parity are found to be much more abundant than those withG− parity. The average multiplicity (charged plus neutral final-state pions) is found to be betweet 4 and 5 over all the energy range explored.

The results of an experiment performed at Adone, the 2×1.5-GeV e+e− Frascati storage ring, are presented. During ∼ 1500 hours of running time a total of 5164 electron-positron elastic scattering events (integrated luminosity L=3.5×1035 cm−2) and 605 noncoplanar events from the reaction e+e−→a±+b±+anything (effective integrated luminosity L=2.5×1035 cm−2) have been collected at c.m. energies ranging from 1.4 to 2.4 GeV. Over the energy range explored (1.4-2.4 GeV), corresponding to an average q2 ranging from 0.8 to 2.4 (GeV/c)2, the yield of wide-angle (60°<θ<120°) electron-positron elastic scattering events is found to be in good agreement with the predictions of quantum electrodynamics (QED) (R=σexpσQED=1.05±0.04). The noncoplanar events appear to be of a hadronic nature and are produced with a much higher cross section than predicted on the basis of ρ, ω, φ dominance at these energies. The total cross section for the reaction e+e−→a±b±+anything shows a rapid increase to ∼ 90 nb between 1.0 and 1.5 GeV and falls off slowly to ∼ 50 nb at 2.4 GeV. Cross sections for some of the channels contributing to this multihadron process (e+e−→π+π−π+π−, e+e−→π+π−π+π−+neutrals, e+e−→3π+3π−) have been determined and are reported.

New data for the reaction π+p→η0Δ++ are presented at 11 momenta between 1.28 and 2.67 GeV/c. Existing data at higher momenta are included in an analysis of the reaction in terms of A2 exchange. An effective trajectory parametrization of the data above 2 GeV/c is shown to describe adequately those data, although it yields an effective trajectory steeper than expected from ρ−A2 exchange degeneracy. An existing Regge-pole model is refitted to the data above 2 GeV/c with generally satisfactory results. Both the effective trajectory parametrization and the Regge model are extrapolated to the lower-momenta data and shown to give remarkably good agreement with the data.
