The inclusive production of charged hadrons in the collisions of quasi-real photons e+e- -> e+e- +X has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The data were taken at e+e- centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the hadrons are compared to theoretical calculations of up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant alpha{s}. The data are also compared to a measurement by the L3 Collaboration, in which a large deviation from the NLO predictions is observed.

In this Report, QCD results obtained from a study of hadronic event structure in high energy e^+e^- interactions with the L3 detector are presented. The operation of the LEP collider at many different collision energies from 91 GeV to 209 GeV offers a unique opportunity to test QCD by measuring the energy dependence of different observables. The main results concern the measurement of the strong coupling constant, \alpha_s, from hadronic event shapes and the study of effects of soft gluon coherence through charged particle multiplicity and momentum distributions.

Infrared and collinear safe event shape distributions and their mean values are determined in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 45 and 202 GeV. A phenomenological analysis based on power correction models including hadron mass effects for both differential distributions and mean values is presented. Using power corrections, alpha_s is extracted from the mean values and shapes. In an alternative approach, renormalisation group invariance (RGI) is used as an explicit constraint, leading to a consistent description of mean values without the need for sizeable power corrections. The QCD beta-function is precisely measured using this approach. From the DELPHI data on Thrust, including data from low energy experiments, one finds beta_0 = 7.86 +/- 0.32 for the one loop coefficient of the beta-function or, assuming QCD, n_f = 4.75 +/- 0.44 for the number of active flavours. These values agree well with the QCD expectation of beta_0=7.67 and n_f=5. A direct measurement of the full logarithmic energy slope excludes light gluinos with a mass below 5 GeV.

Results are presented from a study of the structure of high energy hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at sqrt(s)>192 GeV. The distributions of several event shape variables are compared to resummed O(alphaS^2) QCD calculations. We determine the strong coupling constant at three average centre-of-mass energies: 194.4, 200.2 and 206.2 GeV. These measurements, combined with previous L3 measurements at lower energies, demonstrate the running of alphaS as expected in QCD and yield alphaS(mZ) = 0.1227 +- 0.0012 +- 0.0058, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is theoretical.

We have studied inclusive muon events using all the data collected by the TOPAZ detector at sqrt(s)=58 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 273pb-1. From 1328 inclusive muon events, we measured the ratio R_qq of the cross section for qq-bar production to the total hadronic cross section and forward-backward asymmetry A^q_FB for b and c quarks. The obtained results are R_bb = 0.13+-0.02(stat)+-0.01(syst), R_cc = 0.36+-0.05(stat)+-0.05(syst), A^b_FB = -0.20+-0.16(stat)+-0.01(syst) and A^c_FB = -0.17+-0.14(stat)+-0.02(syst), in fair agreement with a prediction of the standard model.

We present results obtained from a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at various centre-of-mass energies. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are measured from 30GeV to 189GeV and compared with various QCD models. The energy dependence of the moments of event shape variables is used to test a power law ansatz for the non-perturbative component. We obtain a universal value of the non-perturbative parameter alpha_0 = 0.537 +/- 0.073. From a comparison with resummed O(alpha_s^2) QCD calculations, we determine the strong coupling constant at each of the selected energies. The measurements demonstrate the running of alpha_s as expected in QCD with a value of alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1215 +/- 0.0012 (exp) +/- 0.0061 (th).

We employ data taken by the JADE and OPAL experiments for an integrated QCD study in hadronic e+e- annihilations at c.m.s. energies ranging from 35 GeV through 189 GeV. The study is based on jet-multiplicity related observables. The observables are obtained to high jet resolution scales with the JADE, Durham, Cambridge and cone jet finders, and compared with the predictions of various QCD and Monte Carlo models. The strong coupling strength, alpha_s, is determined at each energy by fits of O(alpha_s^2) calculations, as well as matched O(alpha_s^2) and NLLA predictions, to the data. Matching schemes are compared, and the dependence of the results on the choice of the renormalization scale is investigated. The combination of the results using matched predictions gives alpha_s(MZ)=0.1187+{0.0034}-{0.0019}. The strong coupling is also obtained, at lower precision, from O(alpha_s^2) fits of the c.m.s. energy evolution of some of the observables. A qualitative comparison is made between the data and a recent MLLA prediction for mean jet multiplicities.

The total hadronic cross-section sigma_gg(W) for the interaction of real photons, gg->hadrons, is measured for gg centre-of-mass energies 10<W<110 GeV. The cross-section is extracted from a measurement of the process e+e- -> e+e-g*g* -> e+e- hardrons, using a luminosity function for the photon flux together with form factors for extrapolating to real photons (Q^2=0 GeV^2). The data were taken with the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e- centre-of-mass energies 161, 172 and 183 GeV. The cross-section sigma_gg(W) is compared with Regge factorisation and with the energy dependence observed in gp and pp interactions. The data are also compared to models which predict a faster rise of sigma_gg(W) compared to gp and pp interactions due to additional hard gg interactions not present in hadronic collisions.

The shape of jets produced in (quasi-) real photon-photon collisions as well as in e^+e^- annihilation process has been studied with a cone jet finding algorithm, using the data taken with the TOPAZ detector at the TRISTAN e^+e^- collider at an average center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. The results are presented in terms of the jet width as a function of the jet transverse energy(E^{jet}_T) as well as a scaled transverse jet energy, x_T(=2E^{jet}_T/root(s)). The jet width narrows as E^{jet}_T increases; however, at the same value of E^{jet}_T the jet width in gamma-gamma collisions at TRISTAN is significantly narrower than that in gamma p collisions at HERA. By comparing our results with the data in other reactions, it has been shown that the jet width in gamma-gamma, gamma p, p\bar{p} collisions as well as the e^+e^- annihilation process has an approximate scaling behavior as a function of x_T.
The jet width is defined as the full width at the half maximum of the distribution of the transverse energy flow.

We report on a study of radiative Bhabha and quasi-real Compton scattering at centre-of-mass energies between 50 GeV and 170 GeV, and 20 GeV and 140 GeV, respectively, using the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 232.2 pb −1 . A total of 2856 radiative Bhabha and 4641 Compton scattering events are collected. Total and differential cross sections for both reactions are presented and found to be in good agreement with QED expectations. Our measurement of Compton scattering at the highest energies obtained so far is used to derive exclusion limits on the coupling λ for the on-shell production of an excited electron e ★ decaying into a γ e pair in the mass range 20 GeV

A measurement of the strong coupling constant α S is presented using hadronic events produced in e + e − annihilations at s =58.0 GeV from the AMY detector at TRISTAN. The measurement is based on comparisons of the distributions of thrust, heavy jet mass, total jet broadening, wide jet broadening, and energy-energy correlations with QCD calculations resummed up to next-to-leading-logarithms matched with the O ( α S 2 ) perturbative calculation. Combining the results of the individual evaluations, we find α S (58 GeV )=0.132±0.006 .

We have studied the structure of hadronic events with a hard, isolated photon in the final state (e + e − → Z → hadrons + γ) in the 3.6 million hadronic events collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies around 91 GeV. The centre-of-mass energy of the hadronic system is in the range 30 GeV to 86 GeV. Event shape variables have been measured at these reduced centre-of-mass energies and have been compared with the predictions of different QCD Monte Carlo programs. The event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are well reproduced by QCD models. We fit distributions of several global event shape variables to resummed O (α s 2 ) calculations to determine the strong coupling constant α s over a wide range of energies. We find that the strong coupling constant α s decreases with increasing energy, as expected from QCD.

The polarization of tau leptons in the reaction e+ e- --> tau+ tau- has been measured using a e+e- collider, TRISTAN, at the center-of-mass energy of 58 GeV. From the kinematical distributions of daughter particles in tau --> e nu nu-bar, mu nu nu-bar, rho nu or pi(K) nu decays, the average polarization of tau- and its forward-backward asymmetry have been evaluated to be 0.012 +- 0.058 and 0.029 +- 0.057, respectively.
Charged-conjugated states are included. The polarization is measured from final charged-particle energy spectrum. The last value is the combination of the results for all decay modes. The systematic error is not given.

Using the VENUS detector at TRISTAN we have investigated the charm-quark production by detecting D*+ - mesons in the two-photon process of e+et - collisions. The study has confirmed that the charm-quark production rate is larger than that predicted from direct cc̅ production alone. The distribution of the transverse momentum of the D*+ t- mesons and the forward energy flow associated with the D*+ - production suggest that the main part of the observed excess comes from the contribution of a resolved photon process.

Measurements of open charm production in photon-photon collisions made with the AMY detector at TRISTAN are reported. Charmed hadrons were identified by detecting the high momentum muons or electrons from their semileptonic decays. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 275 pb −1 at an average center of mass energy of 58 GeV. Results are presented in the form of cross sections of inclusive leptons from charm for both muons and electrons. The measured cross section is 1.8 standard deviations higher than theoretical predictions based on the direct and photon-gluon fusion process, where the mass of charm quark is assumed to be 1.6 GeV.

Inclusive baryon-antibaryon pair production was studied in two-photon events which were collected at the e+e− collider TRISTAN, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 303 pbt?1. Correlations between a baryon and an antibaryon were studied for their flavors (p or Λ) and their momentum vectors. The experimental results were compared with the expectations from a jet-fragmentation Monte Carlo simulation. We have found that although the ratios of the cross sections of different baryon-flavor combinations are consistent with the Monte Carlo expectations, the cross section shows an excess over the Monte Carlo expectation in a low invariant-mass region of final-state particles at large angles, that indicates a significant contribution from higher-order QCD or non-perturbative effects. The experimental data show no narrow azimuthal-angle correlation, which is expected from a jet-fragmentation Monte Carlo. A search for exclusive Λ pair production has also been made. We have no candidates and have obtained the upper limit for the cross section.

We report a study of single photon production in e + e − collisions at s =58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. From data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 213 pb −1 , 5 single photon candidates remained after event selection, which can be compared with the expected 3.1 ν ν γ and 2.8 background events. These results exclude the selectron mass below 47.2 GeV at the 90% confidence level, if e ̃ L and e ̃ R are mass-degenerate and the photino is massless. Inclusive momentum spectra are measured for all charged particles and for each of $\pi~{\pm}$, $K~{\pm}$, $K~0/\overline{K~0}$, and $p/\overline{p}$ in hadronic events produced via $e~+e~-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$=58GeV . The measured spectra are compared with QCD predictions based on the modified leading log approximation(MLLA). The MLLA model reproduces the measured spectra well. We have measured the photon structure function F 2 γ in the reaction e + e − → e + e − hadrons for average Q 2 values from 5.1 to 338 GeV 2 by using data collected by the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The data have been corrected for detector effects and are compared with theoretical expectations based on QCD. The structure function F 2 γ increases as ln Q 2 , as expected. A sample of events with one or two distinct jets has been identified in the final state. We report on a measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry in e+e−→qq¯ at KEK TRISTAN, where the asymmetry is near maximum. We sum over all flavors and measure the asymmetry by determining the charge of the quark jets. In addition we exploit flavor dependencies in the jet charge determination to enhance the contributions of certain flavors. This provides a check on the asymmetries of individual flavors. The measurement agrees with the standard model expectations.

The full electroweak radiative corrections (up to O(α 3 )) were applied to the data which were analysed together with the published data from PEP and PETRA. We then determined the standard model parameters, M z (the mass of the Z), sin w 2 θ (the Weinberg angle) and Λ MS (the QCD scale parameter) by comparing the experimental data with the prediction of the standard model. The best fit values are M z = 89.2 −1.8 +2.1 GeV/c 2 , sin 2 θ w = 0.233 −0.025 +0.035 and Λ MS = 0.327 −0.206 +0.275 GeV. A constraint is obtained on the heavy top quark mass through the radiative corrections if we take the SLC value of M z (91.1 GeV / c 2 ).

We accumulated e + e − annihilations into multi-hadrons at CM energies between 54.0 and 61.4 GeV with the VENUS detector at TRISTAN. Measured R -ratios are consistent with the standard model using the Z-boson mass; 91.1 GeV/ c 2 . Using two new observables, we searched for a planar four-jet and other multi-jet events resulting from the decay of a charge — 1 3 e b ' quark. Having observed no positive signals, we excluded b' masses between 19.4 and 28.2 GeV/ c 2 with a 95% confidence level, regardless of branching into charged current and loop-induced flavor-changing neutral current decay, including a possible Higgs decay process. The charge + 2 3 e top quark was excluded below f30.2 GeV/ c 2 .
