A Study of the charm and bottom quark production in e+ e- annihilation at s**(1/2) = 58-GeV using prompt electrons

We have studied c (charm) and b (bottom) quark production at the TRISTAN energy region by tagging prompt electrons from the semileptonic decays. Electrons were identified over a wide momentum range between 1 and 29 GeV/ c by a transition-radiation-detector in addition to a lead-glass calorimeter. The production cross sections of c and b quarks and the mean values of the fragmentation functions for c and b quarks were obtained as σ c = 55.9±8.8(stat.)±7.9(syst.) pb, σ b = 13.1±2.9(stat.)±1.0(syst.) pb, 〈 x c 〉 = 0.44±0.08(stat.)±0.04(syst.) and 〈 x b 〉 = 0.72±0.12(stat.)±0.08(syst.), respectively. The forward-backward asymmetries of the c and b quarks were also measured to be −0.57±0.16(stat.)±0.06(syst.) and −0.64±0.26(stat.)± 0.07(syst.), respectively. Both the cross sections and the forward-backward asymmetries of the c and b quarks are consistent with the standard model.

We present a measurement of the cross section for production of isolated prompt photons in p¯p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. The cross section, measured as a function of transverse momentum (PT), agrees qualitatively with QCD calculations but has a steeper slope at low PT.

A search for pairs of highpT prompt photons produced in hydrogen by a 280 GeV/c incidentπ- beam has been carried out using a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter and the Omega spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Clear evidence for the existence of such events is found with a six standard deviation signal forpT>3.0 GeV/c. The cross-sections are consistent with beyond leading order QCD calculations. A discussion on the determination of αs is also presented.

Evidence for Anomalous Prompt Photons in Deep Inelastic Muon Scattering at 200-{GeV}

The inclusive yield of photons has been measured from deep inelastic interactions of 200 GeV muons on hydrogen. After subtracting the contributions from hadron electromagnetic decays and Bethe-Heitler muon bremsstrahlung, residual photons are observed at low p T and low z at a mean level of 0.15±0.06 per interaction. The quark Compton scattering process is unable to explain the data, thus indicating an anomalous photon production.

The inclusive cross sections for production of prompt photons and π0s by 280 GeV/c protons incident on a liquid hydrogen target, have been measured forpT in the range 4.0 to 6.5 GeV/c and for |xF|<0.45. A quantitative comparison of the prompt photon cross section with next-to-leading order QCD predictions using Duke and Owens structure functions is performed. Phenomenological fits to the π0 and prompt photon cross sections are given.

The Production of Prompt Positrons at Low Transverse Momentum Increases With the Square of the Associated Charged Multiplicity

We have measured the production of prompt positrons in pp collisions at √ s = 63 GeV and y = 0 in the p T interval 0.12< p T <1.0 GeV/c. The results indicate that the production of positrons at low p T (<0.4 GeV/ c ) is proportional to the square of the mean multiplicity in the central region | y | < 1. Such a quadratic dependence is not expected from final-state sources such as hadronic bremsstrahlung or hadronic decays, but is natural in models where low mass electron pairs are produced by interactions of constituents created during the collision.
