Measurements were made of the cross section of the reactions π − p → ν ′(958)n, η ′ → 2 γ at momenta at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/c. The experiment was carried out on the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator using the 648 channel hodoscope spectrometer NICE for γ-ray detection. A total of 6000 η′ mesons were recorded. A sharp drop is seen in the differential cross section for t → 0. The dependences of the differential cross sections for the π − p → η ′n and π − p → η n on t are identical. On the basis of the ratio of the cross sections for these reactions at t = 0, i.e. R( η′ n ) t=0 = 0.55 ± 0.06 , the singlet-octet mixing angle for pseudoscalar mesons was determined to be β = −(18.2 ± 1.4)°.

Measurements are reported of inclusivef2(1270) andf0(975) production in γp, π±p andK±p collisions at photon beam energies of 65 to 175 GeV and hadron beam energies of 80 and 140 GeV. Thef2 andf0 mesons were found at masses of 1.250 GeV and 0.961 GeV respectively. Inclusivef2 production at lowxF was found to have a similarpT dependence for each beam type, whereas an additional pion-exchange contribution was found for production by pions at highxF. Cross sections are compared with those for ρ0 production and give no indication of a non-q\(\bar q\) component in eitherf-meson state.

For the reaction π + p → ωΔ ++ data on the total cross section ( σ = 61 ± 12 μ b), differential cross sections, spin density matrix elements and statistical tensor elements are given. We observe natural and unnatural parity exchange contributions to the total cross section. We note that the value of ϱ 00 is not zero and in the helicity frame exhibits a dip at t ≈ −0.25 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A qualitative theoretical discussion of our results is presented.

Diffractive production of the 3 π system has been studied at 63 and 94 GeV using a two magnet spectrometer with high, uniform acceptance. The total number of events used in the analysis is ∼600 000. The A 2 meson is shown to be diffractively produced. The existence of a resonant component in both the 1 + and 2 − enhancements is established and resonance parameters for the corresponding A 1 and A 3 mesons are given. There are several indications in the data of states which would correspond to radial excitations in the quark model.

K ∗0 (890) production in the hyperchange exchange reaction π − p → K ∗0 (890) Λ 0 Σ 0 at 10 GeV/ c (28 448 events) is discussed. An amplitude analysis in the t ′ range up to 1 GeV 2 shows that the production mechanism is dominated by natural parity exchange (∼84%). Comparisons are made with predictions from a Regge model and a quark model.

A study of π − p → K ∗ Λ and π − p → K ∗ Σ° at 3.9 GeV /c indicates that the main features of both reactions can be interpreted in terms of simple exchange processes, the first involving both natural and unnatural exchange, the second showing evidence for natural parity exchange only.

We have investigated the final states K ∗0 (890)Σ, K ∗0 (890)Σ 0 and K ∗0 (890) Y 1 ∗0 (1385) produced in π − p interactions at 3.93 GeV/ c . We present the differential cross sections and spin density matrix elements for the resonances as functions of momentum transfer, as well as the gL and Σ 0 polarizations. The Σ 0 polarization is found to be positive and maximal. An amplitude analysis is performed for the K ∗ Λ and K ∗ Σ 0 reactions, and it is found that one natural parity transversity amplitude is dominant for the latter.

An optical spark chamber and neutron time-of-flight spectrometer experiment studied the reaction π−p→π+π−n at incident pion momentum of 4.5 GeVc in the mass region of the f0 meson. Analysis of the data shows no evidence for anomalous structure in the f0 mass spectrum. The two-pion differential cross section in the f0 region is consistent with Wolf's one-pion-exchange model for momentum transfers (squared) −t≲0.7 (GeVc))2. The differential cross section is larger than that predicted at high momentum transfer, and may be attributed to natural-parity-exchange contributions as evidenced in the f0 decay distribution.

DIPION PRODUCTION CROSS SECTION NORMALIZED AT LOW -T TO A WOLF-MODEL F CROSS SECTION OF 400 MUB.
An experiment using optical spark chambers and a neutron time-of-flight hodoscope has been performed at the Argonne National Laboratory on the reaction π−p→ω0n. The differential cross section and the experimentally accessible density-matrix elements were determined in the momentum transfer interval 0.05≤|t|≤1.0 (GeV/c)2 at each of three incident pion momenta 3.65, 4.50, and 5.50 GeV/c. Our results show the following general features: (1) a dip in the forward differential cross section for |t|≤0.2 (GeV/c)2, (2) a slope at larger momentum transfers which increases as the incident pion momentum increases, and (3) no dips in either dσdt or ρ11+ρ1−1, the natural-parity exchange combination, at |t|=0.6 (GeV/c)2.

Data on the reaction π − p → π + π − π 0 have been taken at 12 and 15 GeV/ c with the CERN Omega multiparticle spectrometer. In a 3-pion partial-wave analysis strong production of A 2 0 (1310) and ω ∗ (1675) is observed. Total and differential cross sections are determined and density matrix elements presented as a function of t in the t - and s -channel frames. The energy dependence of A 2 0 production is studied, and a comparison of ω(780), A 2 0 (1310) and ω ∗ (1675) production is made.

The reactions of positive pions with protons yielding four charged particles and one or more neutrals have been studied, especially the reaction π+p→Δ++ω0→pπ+π+π−π0. The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 100 000-picture exposure of the Argonne-MURA 30-in. liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, with a beam of incident pions of 4.09−GeVc momentum. Comparisons have been made with corresponding results of other experiments at various incident beam momenta, and with the predictions of some theoretical models of the π+p interaction.

We present the results of a detailed study of ω′(1675) production in the reaction π+p→Δ++π+π−π0 from a high-statistics bubble-chamber experiment at 15 GeV/c. We have measured the mass, width, and cross section as well as differential cross section and spin density matrix elements and compare then to A20 production in the same reaction. We show clear evidence for the resonant phase increase of the 3− (ρπ)fI=0 amplitude with ω′(1675) production.

The production of the f 0 (1270) has been studied in the reaction π − p → π + π − n at 12 and 15 GeV/ c in the momentum transfer range 0.02 to 0.80 GeV 2 . Differential and total cross sections for the reaction π − p → f 0 n have been determined. The f 0 decay density matrix elements have been evaluated requiring all the matrix eigenvalues to be non-negative. The relative unnatural and natural parity exchange contributions to the f 0 production have been studied. The results are compared with a Regge exchange model formulated in terms of the pion and A 2 exchanges including cut contributions.

We have studied backward baryon and meson production in π−p→pπ+π−π− at 8.0 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of a fast forward proton. Our data sample (1227 events) displays prominent N*ρ and N*f quasi-two-body production. These states are investigated with regard to the peripheral nature of the production mechanism and sequential decay of the excited baryon and meson systems. The quasi-two-body production of N*ρ and N*f intermediate states is consistent with u-channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. In the π+π−π− mass distribution we observe a 3- to 4- standard-deviation enhancement at M3π=1897±17 MeV/c2 with full width at half maximum = 110 ± 82 MeV/c2, but find no but find no evidence for backward A1 or A2 production. We observe Δ++(1232) production in the pπ+ effective mass distribution.

From a large-statistics π+p experiment at 7.1 GeV/c, data are presented on the reactions π+p→ρ0Δ++(1238) and π+p→ωΔ++(1238). Cross sections, differential cross sections, and vector-meson single-density-matrix elements are presented and a general comparison of the production properties of the two reactions is given. In addition to (ρ,ω)Δ++(1238) production there is also strong evidence for production of a π+p enhancement with mass ∼ 1880 MeV, Γ∼200 MeV, and J≥72 produced in association with the ρ and ω resonances. Detailed properties of this structure are presented and its production mechanism is compared with that of the corresponding Δ(1238) reactions. This state is also observed in the reaction K+p→K*0(890)Δ++(1880) at 12.0 GeV/c, for which data are also presented.

JACKSON FRAME.
We have done a JP analysis of the low-mass π+ω system, using the reaction π+p→π+ωp at 7.1 GeV/c. We find that the B resonance cannot be JP=0− and must belong to the unnatural-parity series (1+, 2−, 3+,...), regardless of the amount of interference between the B and the background. If we assume that the B does not interfere with the background, we find that all JP states for the resonance are rejected except for 1+. Even if interference effects are allowed in the analysis, a good fit with reasonable parameters is obtained only with the 1+ hypothesis for the B meson. In an appendix, we give relevant theoretical formulas appropriate for a πω system with any number of spin-parity states and arbitrary degrees of interference among them.
