THE TOTAL CROSS SECTION HAS BEEN CALCULATED FROM R.
A new measurement of the total e + e − → hadrons cross-section in the centre of mass energy range 1.8-2.5 GeV, performed by the FENICE experiment at the Frascati e + e − storage ring ADONE, is presented. The behaviour of the total cross section together with the proton electromagnetic time-like form factor is discussed in terms of a narrow vector resonance close to the nucleon-antinucleon threshold.
Only statistical errors are quoted.
The cross sections for e + e − → hadrons, e + e − , μ + μ − have been measured in the vicinity of the J Ψ resonance using the BES detector operated at BEPC. The partial widths for J Ψ to hadrons, electrons, muons and the total width have been determined to be Γ h = 74.1 ± 8.1 keV, Γ e = 5.14 ± 0.39 keV, Γ μ = 5.13 ± 0.52 keV, and Γ = 84.4 ± 8.9 keV, respectively.

We carried out the energy scan between E CM = 58 and 60 GeV at the TRISTAN e + e − collider to search for the possible narrow resonance suggested by the L3 experiment at LEP. The total cross sections are measured for γγ, multihadron, e + e − and μ + μ − production at ten energy points covering this energy range almost uniformly. The results are in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions, and 95% confidence level upper limits are set to Γ ee × BR of the hypothetical scalar and tensor resonances.

We measured the differential jet-multiplicity distribution in e+e− annihilation with the Mark II detector. This distribution is compared with the second-order QCD prediction and αs is determined to be 0.123±0.009±0.005 at √s≊MZ (at the SLAC Linear Collider) and 0.149±0.002±0.007 at √s=29 GeV (at the SLAC storage ring PEP). The running of αs between these two center-of-mass energies is consistent with the QCD prediction.

A study of the lateral development of jets of hadrons produced in electron-positron annihilation has been used to determine the strong coupling constant αs. Data were obtained with the MAC detector at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP at s=29 GeV. Based on the parton calculations of Gottschalk and Shatz, a value for αs of 0.133±0.005(stat)±0.009(syst) has been determined for string fragmentation, and 0.112±0.008(stat)±0.007(syst) for an independent-jet model.

The ϒ′ state has been observed as a narrow resonance at M ( ϒ ′) = 10.02 ± 0.02 GeV in e + e − annihilations, using a NaI and lead-glass detector in the DORIS storage ring at DESY. The ratio Г ee Г had /Г tot of electronic, hadronic, and total widths has been measured to be 0.32 ± 0.13 keV. The parameters of the Г particle have also been determined to be/ M (Г)
The data renormalized to the expected level of continuum based on the ratioof R=sigma(hadrons)/sigma(mu+mu-) = 4.7 at sqrt(s) = 5 GeV.

The strong coupling constant α s was determined from analyses of the thrust, heavy jet mass and, differential 2-jet rate, using e + e - hadronic events at s = 58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The NLLjet Monte Carlo simulation (NLLjet) and analytic formulae based on resummation up to the next-to-leading logarithms combined with O ( α 2 s ) calculations were used to evaluate α s . The average α s values at Q 2 = (58 GeV) 2 from the analyses are α s = 0.125 ± 0.009 for NLLjet and α s = 0.132 ± 0.008 for the resummed analytic formulae.

Measurements of the QCD colour factors C_A and C_F and of the number of active quark flavours n_f in the process e+e- -> hadrons at high energy are presented. They are based on fits of O(alpha_S**2)+NLLA QCD calculations to distributions of the event shape observables 1-T, C, B_T and B_W measured at centre-of-mass energies from 14 GeV to 189 GeV. Hadronisation effects are approximated with power correction calculations which also depend on the QCD gauge structure. In this approach potential biases from hadronisation models are reduced. Our results for individually measured quantities are n_f = 5.64 +- 1.35, C_A = 2.88 +- 0.27 and C_F = 1.45 +- 0.27 in good agreement with QCD based on the SU(3) symmetry group where n_f=5 for the energies considered here, C_A=3 and C_F=4/3. From simultaneous fits of C_A and C_F we find C_A = 2.84 +- 0.24 and C_F = 1.29 +- 0.18, which is also in good agreement with the QCD expectation.
CA, CF, are the color factors for SU(N) group. NF is the number of the active flavors.
