Cross sections or upper limits are reported for 12 meson-baryon and two baryon-baryon reactions for an incident momentum of 9.9 GeV/c, near 90° c.m.: π±p→pπ±,pp±,π+°±,K+Σ±, (Λ0/Σ0)K0; K±p→pK±; p±p→pp. By studying the flavor dependence of the different reactions, we have been able to isolate the quark-interchange mechanism as dominant over gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation.

We present the final results of a measurement of the polarization parameter P 0 in high-energy n~-p and p-p elastic scattering, performed using a target which contained polarized protons. Data were taken at beam momenta of 6.0, 8.0, 10.0 and 12.0 GeV/c for n-, and of 6.0, 10.0 and 12.0 GeV/c for n+ and p, in the interval of invariant four-momentum transfer squared-t from 0.1 to 0.75 (GeV/c)2.

Invariant single-particle cross sections for pion and proton production in π ± p interactions at 8 and 16 GeV/ c are presented in terms of integrated distributions as functions of x , reduced rapidity ζ and p ⊥ 2 , and also in terms of double differential cross sections E d 2 σ /(d x d p ⊥ 2 ) and d ζ d p ⊥ 2 ). A comparison of π ± and π − induced reactions is made and the energy dependence is discussed. It is shown that the single-particle structure function cannot be factorized in its dependece on transverse and longitudinal momentum. For the beam-unlike pion, there is an indication for factorizability in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum in a small central region.

Over 100 unambiguous π − + p → Λ + Λ + n events have been observed in a magnet spark chamber. The data provide good evidence for peripheral production of Λ Λ and n Λ (via meson exchange) and against peripheral n Λ (double baryon exchange). No resonances in the Λ Λ system are observed. Angular distributions and Λ( Λ ) polarizations are analysed.

Data on the reactions π − p → p π − , p p → π + π − , K − p → pK and p p → p p at 8 and 12 GeV/ c are presented. Our results agree with line reversal symmetry (between π − p → p π − and p p → π + π − ), Regge pole behaviour for non-exotic reactions ( π − p → p π − , p p → π + π − ), and universal behaviour for exotic reactions ( p p → p p , K − p → pK − ) with d σ /d u | u =0 ∼ s −10 excluding the existence of a “glory” mechanism in p p elastic backward scattering in our energy range.

We have measured the cross sections for the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-rule-violating reactions π+n→φp and π+p→φΔ++ at 10 GeV/c using the large-aperture-solenoid spectrometer at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We measure the total cross sections for these two reactions to be 179±72 nb for the φp reaction and 172±75 nb for the φΔ++ reaction. Both of these cross sections are consistent with the hypothesis of the φ being produced solely by its nonstrange-quark component as determined from the octet-singlet mixing angle resulting from application of the Gell-Mann—Okubo mass formula to the vector-meson nonet. These data are thus inconsistent with an ideally mixed φ meson.

Measurements of the differential cross section for the reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and π+p→K+Y*+(1385) are reported at 3.5, 3.75, 4.0, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. Polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is also reported at 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. At small |t|, the cross section for π+p→K+Σ+ is well described by an exponential Aebt with slopes in the range b≈8−10 (GeV/c)−2; for |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2 this slope decreases considerably. The cross section for π+p→K+Y*+(1385) is well described for |t|>0.2 (GeV/c)2 by a single exponential of slope about half that for π+p→K+Σ+; there is no break near |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2. We observe a dip in this cross section near t=0. The polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is consistent with zero for |t|<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and becomes large and positive for larger |t|.

The production of η(550) and ω(780) mesons is studied in π ± p interactions at 16 GeV/ c and K − p interactions at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections for exclusive channels are presented, and for the π + p data differential cross sections are given for quasi-inclusive production where the η or ω is required to be accompanied by charged particles only. Close similarities are observed between η, ω and also ϱ 0 (770) production in terms of longitudinal and transverse variables. By a rough estimate, the η, ω and ϱ 0 inclusive yields are found to be in the ratio 0.32 : 0.85 : 1, respectively, for 16 GeV/ c π + p collisions. We present results on an amplitude analysis of the K + K − system produced in the reaction π − p→K + K − n from threshold up to 2.2 GeV. The branching ratios of f 0 and f' to K K have been determined. In the low mass region of the K K system the observation of an S-wave enhancement at 1.3 GeV and the interference of the f 0 -A 2 -f' mesons are studied. We observe a 3 − structure in the mass region of 1.7 GeV which is consistent with g 0 production. With this interpretation the branching ratio g→ K K has been determined. Results are presented on vector meson production in the hypercharge exchange reactions: π + p → K ∗+ (890) Y + and K − p→ ρ − Y + where Y + is either Σ + or Y ∗+ (1385). These reactions have been studied at 7 GeV/ c and 11.5 GeV/ c using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. Total and differential cross sections, hyperon polarization, and vector meson decay angular distributions are presented. We find that reactions with Σ + production are dominated by natural parity exchange. The Y ∗ (1385) reactions are consistent with substantial natural parity exchange contributions but also show significant unnatural parity exchange. The differential cross sections and polarization measurements for the vector meson production are compared to the pseudoscalar production reactions.

We present the results and the analysis of a high-statistics experiment to study A 2 and g production in the reaction π − p→K − K S 0 p at 10 GeV/ c . In each resonance region we perform a moment analysis of the data, and from the moments we determine the production amplitudes as a function of t . We find A 2 production proceeds dominantly by natural-parity (pomeron and f) exchange. We compare A 2 and diffractive K ∗ (1420) production. We find g production proceeds by π and ω exchanges; we determine the g → K K branching ratio.

The polarization of the Σ+ has been measured for the line-reversed reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and K−p→π−Σ+ at 7 and 11.6 GeV/c using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. Since the Σ+ decay is observed in the bubble chamber, the trigger of the flash lamps on a fast K+(π−) did not bias the polarization measurements. We find that the Σ+ polarizations from the two reactions have opposite signs but similar magnitudes and are in much better agreement with the predictions of weak exchange degeneracy than previous lower-energy comparisons.

Going from the lower to the higher momentum, the differences in cross section between the two reactions diminish at low | t | by about a factor 2. A comparison is made of the properties and production mechanisms of the π + ω and K − ω systems produced in the reactions π + p → π + ω p at 4, 5, 8 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p → K − ω p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the π + ω case apeak is observed at 1.23 GeV (the B meson), while the K − ω mass distribution has a threshold enhancement. The cross section of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) π + ω system falls as p lab −2 , while that of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) K − ω system is almost constant with energy, indicating diffractive production of the K − ω system, but not of the πω system. Using a modified version of the Illinois partial-wave analysis program, it is found that the K − ω system is dominantly produced in the J P = 1 + state with small contributions of 0 − and 2 + , mainly by natural parity exchange - as is found for reactions such as K − p → (K − π + π − )p which are predominantly diffractive. For the π + ω system in the B mass region, J P = 1 + states, produced mainly by natural parity exchange are found; the contributions of 0 − P, 1 − P, 2 − P and 2 + D are consistent with zero. The 1 + D state occurs in the π + ω case but not in the K − ω system, nor in the K ππ − system produced in the K − p → K ππ p reaction.

The statistical significance of each peak is greater than 6 standard deviations. Masses and natural widths of these resonances are respectively M = 2020 ± 3 MeV , Λ 1 = 24 ± 12 MeV and M 2 = 2204 ± 5 MeV, Λ 2 = 16 −16 +20 MeV. Our data are consistent with a small production of the narrow ∼ 1935 MeV resonance already reported. Production cross sections for these new p p resonances are given.

From an experiment done with the CERN Omega spectrometer, triggered by a fast forward proton device, we present results on the differential cross section d σ d u for π − p backward elastic scattering. The d σ d u distribution agrees with an A e Bu law. The compilation of existing results shows a discrepancy between results but the ( d σ d u ) u=0 data fit perfectly an s 2 α 0 −2 dependence, as predicted by a single Δδ Regge trajectory exchange. A search for the reaction π − p → d p , with a fast forward deuteron, which can be produced by a double-baryon exchange mechanism, gives cross-section upper limits of ∼1% of the backward elastic cross section.

In a single-arm spectrometer experiment, high-precision measurements of dσdt for π−p, K−p, and p¯p elastic scattering have been made at 8 and 16 GeV/c. The π−p data show rich structure at 8 GeV/c, indicative of strong non-Pomeron contributions, while the 16-GeV/c data are much smoother. For −t≳1 (GeV/c)2 there is a strong s dependence while there is very little for −t<1 (GeV/c)2. For p¯p scattering the forward region is smoothly diffractive for −t<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and shows antishrinkage. The exponential slope parameter b is measured to be 12.36 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 8 GeV/c and 11.40 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 16 GeV/c. The structure near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2 seen at lower energies is still obvious at 16 GeV/c. The K−p data show some structure at 8 GeV/c, but can be represented adequately by a quadratic exponential form. At 16 GeV/c the K−p angular distribution shows antishrinkage and lies above the 8-GeV/c cross section for 0.11<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2.

Angular distributions of π + and K + p elastic scattering have been measured for an incident beam momentum of 10.0 GeV/ c . For π + p elastic scattering almost the complete angular distribution was measured. The angular distribution of proton-proton elastic scattering was measured for an incident momentum of 9.0 GeV/ c in the interval of the four-momentum transfer squared from 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 to 5.0 (GeV/ v ) 2 . For π + p elastic scattering the structures at − t = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 and − t = 4.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 are less pronounced than at lower momenta. The cross section for scattering at 90° in the c.m. system is of the order of 1 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 . For K + p elastic scattering is a break in the angular distribution around − t = 3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The differential cross sections for proton-proton elastic scattering decrease smoothly with increasing momentum transfers.

Small-angle differential cross sections are presented here for π−+p→π0+n charge-exchange scattering between 2.4 and 3.8 GeV/c. The differential cross section near t=0 displays two minima and one maximum in this momentum interval, reflecting the presence of the N32*(2420), N32*(2850), and N12*(2650) resonances; at larger t values, the cross sections fall off exponentially as a function of t, just as has been previously observed for charge-exchange scattering above 6 GeV/c. The pion-charge-exchange data reported here at 6 and 10 GeV/c extend out to large angles, showing a maximum near t=0, followed by an exponential falloff as e10t, a minimum near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2, and then a second maximum near −t=1.0 (GeV/c)2. The π−+p→η0+n differential cross section shows a maximum near t=0, followed by an exponential falloff as e4t, much less steep than the π0 slope. These data are compared to our previously published data and to those of the Saclay-Orsay group.

Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

Experimental results on the reaction π − p → K ∗0 (890) X 0 at 10 GeV /c are presented. By using the K ∗0 polarization measurements, a detailed study of the production has been carried out as a function of the missing mass squared and of the four-momentum trasnfer squared to the K ∗0 . We found that: (a) K ∗0 production is dominated by natural parity exchange; (b) K ∗0 helicity-zero production dominates the unnatural parity exchange contribution and (c) the main features of the reaction are in agreement with the predictions of the finite mass sum rules.

Measurements of inclusive scattering in the target-fragmentation region are extended to higher incident energy. The combined data set shows departures from an approach to the asymptotic scaling limit as A+Bs−12 that are significant even at the highest energies. When these departures are taken into account, the data approach a limit that is consistent with equal cross sections induced by particles and antiparticles and with Pomeron factorization. The corrections to A+Bs−12 are so large that detailed tests of Mueller-Regge relationships are not conclusive.
