A systematic analysis is presented on the reaction K + p → K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ for nine incident momenta between 4.6–16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and vector meson single density matrix elements are given. As a function of energy, little if any change is observed in either the shapes of the differential cross sections or in the values of the density matrix elements. The data are interpreted in terms of current ideas on t -channel exchange mechanisms.

Deep inelastic scattering with leading protons or large rapidity gaps at HERA

The dissociation of virtual photons, $\gamma^{\star} p \to X p$, in events with a large rapidity gap between $X$ and the outgoing proton, as well as in events in which the leading proton was directly measured, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities $Q^2>2$ GeV$^2$ and $\gamma^{\star} p$ centre-of-mass energies $40<W<240$ GeV, with $M_X>2$ GeV, where $M_X$ is the mass of the hadronic final state, $X$. Leading protons were detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer. The cross section is presented as a function of $t$, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and $\Phi$, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the proton scattering plane. It is also shown as a function of $Q^2$ and $\xpom$, the fraction of the proton's momentum carried by the diffractive exchange, as well as $\beta$, the Bjorken variable defined with respect to the diffractive exchange.

Interference between (p,f0 ...) and (rho0,b0,...) exchanges in pion diffraction dissociation at 16 gev/c

It is found in the reactions π ± p →( π ± π + π − )p, believed to be dominated by diffraction dissociation, that the d σ d t′ distributions show a “cross-over” effect at t ′ ≈ 0.15, similar to the effect observed in elastic scattering. This gives evidence for the interference of ( ϱ 0 , B 0 ,…)-exchanges with ( P , f 0 , …) -exchanges in pion diffraction dissociation reactions. No such evidence is found for baryon dissociation, π ± p → π ± (p π + π − ), at the same energy.

We have performed absolute measurements of the differential cross section for elastic e−p scattering in the range of momentum transfer from Q2=2.9 to 31.3 (GeV/c)2. Combined statistical and systematic uncertainties in the cross-section measurements ranged from 3% at low Q2 to 19% at high Q2. These data have been used to extract the proton magnetic form factor GMp(Q2). The results show a smooth decrease of Q4GMp with momentum transfer above Q2=10 (GeV/c)2. These results are compared with recent predictions of perturbative QCD.

The differential cross section for neutron-proton elastic scattering was measured in the diffraction region with incident neutron momenta between 5 and 30 GeV/ c . The experiment was an optical-spark-chamber-counter experiment conducted at the Brookhaven National Laboratory alternating gradient synchrotron. A well collimated neutron beam with a broad energy spectrum was incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The scattered neutrons were detected in a thick-plate spark-chamber array while the recoil protons were detected and momentum analyzed in a magnetic spectrometer with thin-foil spark chambers.

VAN HOVE ANALYSIS OF THE REACTIONS pi- p ---> pi- pi- pi+ p AND pi+ p ---> pi+ pi+ pi- p AT 16-GeV/c

Data from the reactions π−p→π−π−π+p and π+p→π+π+π−p have been obtained at 16 GeV/c in approximately equal samples from the BNL 80-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. We have studied both reactions for resonance production and compared our results with predictions of the one-pion-exchange model (OPEM) calculated by Wolf. The four-body longitudinal phase-space (LPS) plot suggested by Van Hove was used to analyze the data from both reactions. The events were separated according to distinct regions of the LPS plot in order to study the following classes of quasi-two-body final states: (1) diffractively produced three-pion states, (2) diffractively produced ππp states, (3) double-resonance production such as ρ0Δ++, (4) single-resonance production such as π−π−Δ++. The Van Hove analysis provided a much cleaner separation of resonances from background effects than the usual techniques. We observe production of the A1 and A2 mesons as well as the N*(1470) and N*(1700) isobars in the π+π−p system for both reactions. There is strong formation of the doubly resonant states ρ0Δ++ and f0Δ++ and the general features of the nondiffractive events are all in good agreement with one-pion exchange. Detailed comparisons between the data and the OPEM in each LPS plot region show that Van Hove analysis provides a sensitive test for the OPE model.

The construction of a K L 0 beam for the CERN 2 m hydrogen bubble chamber and the derivation of the beam momentum spectrum are described. Cross sections are presented for the reaction K L 0 +p → K S 0 + π + + π − +p for K L 0 momenta up to 17 GeV/ c . The reacti is seen to be dominated, particularly at the highest momenta, where there are no previous data, by the production of the Q 0 - Q 0 system. The shapes of the t -distributions for Q 0 and Q 0 prodcution are found to be different in a sense opposite to that expected from the pion-exchange Deck model. A model in which the observed effect is ascribed to the addition of a K ∗ exchange Deck graph is found to be incompatible with the data. The data are, however, consistent with a model in which the Q 0 - Q 0 system is largely resonant and the sense of the cross-over is determined by the s -channel quantum numbers.

We present a systematic investigation of channel cross sections in K − p interactions at 32 GeV/ c . The energy dependence of these cross sections is discussed. We also investigate a few non-diffractive two-body reactions. The total cross sections of the two reactions K − p → K ∗− (890) p and K − p → K ∗− (1420) p have a markedly different energy behaviour. There is clear evidence for the reaction K − p → K ∗0 (890) N 0 (1688) ; its differnttial cross section exhibits a sharp forward slope of 24 ± 3 GeV −2 .

A high-statistics measurement of the reaction π − p→ η n; η →2 γ has been performed at the 70 GeV Serpukhov accelerator for 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/ c incident pion momentum using the NICE set-up with its associated 648-channel hodoscope spectrometer for γ-ray detection. It is found that the spin-flip and non-spin-flip amplitudes can be parametrized, for small | t |, as exponentials with the same slopes to within a few percent. For | t | ≳ 1 (GeV/ c ) 2 there is a break in the differential cross section. In addition, the A 2 effective trajectory deviates markedly for | t | ≳ 1 GeV/ c ) 2 from the linear behaviour valid for smaller | t |.

Differential cross sections have been measured for nucleon-isobar production and elastic scattering in p−p interactions from 6.2 to 29.7 GeVc in the laboratory angle range 8<θsc<265 mrad. N*' s at 1236, 1410, 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV were observed. Computer fits to the mass spectra under varying assumptions of resonance and background shapes show that conclusions on t and s dependence are only slightly affected despite typical variations in absolute normalization of ± 35%. Logarithmic t slopes in the small- |t| range are ∼15 (GeVc)−2 for the N*(1410), ∼5 (GeVc)−2 for the N*'s at 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV, and ∼9 (GeVc)−2 for elastic scattering. Also for the small- |t| data, cross sections for N*'s at 1410, 1500, 1690, and 2190 MeV and for elastic scattering vary only slightly with Pinc consistent with the dominance of Pomeranchuk exchange and with diffraction dissociation. A fit of N*(1690) total cross sections to the form σ∝P−n gives n=0.34±0.06, while for elastic scattering n=0.20±0.05. For the N*(1690) the effective Regge trajectory has the slope αeff′(0)=0.38±0.17. When compared with N* production in π−, K−, and p¯ beams these data also agree with approximate factorization of the Pomeranchuk trajectory. N*(1236) cross sections are consistent with other measurements at similar momenta. For −t>1 (GeVc)−2, elastic scattering cross sections decrease approximately as Pinc−2, and they and N*(1500)− and N*(1690)− production cross sections have t slopes consistent with 1.6 (GeVc)−2.

A study of the reaction π + p → p π + π o at 16 GeV/ c incident momentum has been made using the prism plot analysis to reject background events arising from elastic and multineutral contaminations and to separate different reaction channels ( ϱ + p, g + p, Δ + π + , Δ ++ π o , π + (p π o ) DD ). Cross sections, invariant mass distributions and production and decay angular distributions are presented. For the channel corresponding to proton diffraction dissociation strong violation of both s - and t -channel helicity conservation is found for low values of the (p π o ) mass. We demonstrate that the prism plot method provides a better separation of background events than conventional methods using kinematic cuts.

The reactions π + p giving π 0 Δ ++ (1236), η (549) Δ ++ (1236) and η ′(958) Δ ++ (1236) are studied at 16 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and Δ ++ (1236) spin density matrix elements are presented. The π 0 Δ ++ (1236) differential cross section d σ d t′ indicates a dip towards t ′ = 0 and has a minimum at t ′ ≅ 0.6 GeV 2 . The Δ ++ (1236) spin density matrix elements are consistent with the predictions of the Stodolsky-Sakurai model, except perhaps near the forward direction. For ηΔ ++ (1236), the differential cross section d σ d t′ turns over in the forward direction and presents no further structure. SU(3) sum rules are tested and found to be approximately satisfied. The data agree with factorization of ϱ exchange. The effective A 2 trajectory is calculated and found to be consistent with that reported from the reaction π − p → η n.

In a single-arm spectrometer experiment, high-precision measurements of dσdt for π−p, K−p, and p¯p elastic scattering have been made at 8 and 16 GeV/c. The π−p data show rich structure at 8 GeV/c, indicative of strong non-Pomeron contributions, while the 16-GeV/c data are much smoother. For −t≳1 (GeV/c)2 there is a strong s dependence while there is very little for −t<1 (GeV/c)2. For p¯p scattering the forward region is smoothly diffractive for −t<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and shows antishrinkage. The exponential slope parameter b is measured to be 12.36 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 8 GeV/c and 11.40 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 16 GeV/c. The structure near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2 seen at lower energies is still obvious at 16 GeV/c. The K−p data show some structure at 8 GeV/c, but can be represented adequately by a quadratic exponential form. At 16 GeV/c the K−p angular distribution shows antishrinkage and lies above the 8-GeV/c cross section for 0.11<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2.

The differential cross sections for neutron-proton charge-exchange scattering have been measured for incident neutron momenta between 8 and 29 GeV /c and for four-momentum transfers | t | between 0.002 and 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A neutron beam with a broad momentum spectrum was scattered from a liquid hydrogen target. The momenta and scattering angles of the forward-scattered protons were measured by a spark-chamber magnet spectrometer. The flight times and scattering angles of the recoil neutrons were measured by a bank of thick scintillation counters. The efficiencies of the neutron counters were determined in a separate measurement. Absolute normalization of the data was obtained from a measurement of the diffraction dissociation of neutrons from carbon nuclei. Differential cross sections, based on ∼ 23 000 events, are presented for 9 different momenta. The shape of the differential cross sections and the momentum dependence are examined in detail.

The neutron-proton elastic differential cross section has been measured for incident momenta between 10 and 70 GeV/c and for values of the momentum transfer squared between 0.1 and 2.8 (GeV/c) 2 . The forward peak and the break at about ∣ t ∣ = 1 (GeV/ c ) 2 are very similar to corresponding pp data.

The reaction π + p→ ωΔ ++ (1236) is studied at 16 GeV/ c . Cross section, differential cross section, single and joint spin-density matrix elements are given and the correlations between the ε and Δ ++ (1236) decay angular distributions are investigated. Natural and unnatural spin-parity exchanges contribute to this reaction in roughly equal amounts. Natural exchanges lead predominantly to Δ ++ (1236) with helicity ± 3 2 , while unnatural exchanges lead predominantly to Δ ++ (1236) with helicity ± 1 2 and to ε with helicity zero. Furthermore, unnatural exchanges are small at t ′≅0.2 GeV 2 compared to other t ′ values, which may be due to the nonsense wrong-signature-zero of the B-meson exchange. Quark model relations are found to be satisfied by the data.

The reaction π + p → ϱ 0 Δ ++ (1236) at 16 GeV/ c has been studied. Cross section, differential cross section, single and joint spin-density matrix elements are given. Correlations between the ϱ 0 and Δ ++ (1236) decay distributions are observed. Unnatural spin-parity exchanges, mainly observed at small t ' values, dominate the ϱ 0 Δ ++ (1236) production. The natural exchange contributions are only (7 ± 2)% and become as important as the unnatural exchanges beyond t ' = 0.3 GeV 2 . Contributions to Δ ++ (1236) helicity 3 2 states do not exceed 20% of the total ϱ 0 Δ ++ (1236) cross section and are mainly due to unnatural exchanges.

Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.
