The total cross section for the reaction pp→ppπ0 was measured at nine center-of-mass energies from 1.5 to 23 MeV above threshold. The experiment was carried out with the Indiana Cooler, a recently constructed storage ring. The experimental advantages of an electron-cooled proton beam were utilized. The data cover an energy range where only the lowest possible angular momentum state contributes in the exit channel. The measured energy dependence of the total cross section is not compatible with that predicted by models of s-wave pion production and rescattering.

Spin transfer measurements of the pi d (polarized) ---> p p (polarized) reaction spanning the Delta resonance

Feltham, A. ; Trelle, R.P. ; Jones, G. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 66 (1991) 2573-2576, 1991.
Inspire Record 315151 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19906

The first spin-transfer observables for the πd→pp reaction have been measured at a number of energies spanning the Δ resonance in this system. These parameters correspond to KSL and KSS of the pp→dπ reaction for incident proton energies ranging from 600 to 800 MeV. Such data can provide an important constraint on the determination of the partial-wave amplitudes describing this fundamental reaction. The discrepancies between our data, theoretical predictions, and values calculated from published partial-wave amplitudes demonstrate the need for further work in this area.

Limit on the anti-d / anti-u asymmetry of the nucleon sea from Drell-Yan production

We present an analysis of 800-GeV proton-induced Drell-Yan production data from isoscalar targets 2H and C, and from W, which has a large neutron excess. The ratio of cross sections per nucleon, R-σW/σIS, is sensitive to the difference between the d¯(x) and u¯(x) structure functions of the proton. We find that R is close to unity in the range 0.04≤x≤0.27, allowing upper limits to be set on the d¯-u¯ asymmetry. Additionally, the shape of the differential cross section m3 d2σ/dxF dm for 2H at xF≊0 shows no evidence of an asymmetric sea in the proton. We examine the implications of these data for various models of the violation of the Gottfried sum rule in deep-inelastic lepton scattering.

A sample of 24 700 Ω− hyperons was produced by a prolarized neutral beam in a spin-transfer reaction. The Ω− polarizations are found to be -0.054±0.019 and -0.149±0.055 at mean Ω− momenta of 322 and 398 GeV/c, respectively. The directions of these polarizations give an Ω− magnetic moment of -(1.94±0.17±0.14)μN

Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the inclusive B* cross section above the Υ(4S) resonance in the energy range from 10.61 to 10.70 GeV. We also report a new measurement of the energy of the B*→Bγ transition photon of 46.2±0.3±0.8 MeV.

Nuclear dependence of high x(t) hadron and high tau hadron pair production in p A interactions at s**(1/2) = 38.8-GeV

Phys.Rev.Lett. 68 (1992) 452-455, 1992.
Inspire Record 335754 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19847

We present a high-statistics, species-identified measurement of the W-to-Be per-nucleon cross-section ratio, RW/Be, for high-xt hadrons and high-τ h+h− pairs produced in p-A collisions at √s =38.8 GeV. The data extend to 0.62 in xt and 0.39 in √τ . For single hadrons, RW/Be peaks at pt≊5 GeV/c and decreases to ≊1 for mesons with pt>8 GeV/c. At fixed pt, RW/Be falls with √s . For symmetric pairs with √τ >0.28, RW/Be=0.84±0.02±0.07, suggesting a nuclear suppression of high-z fragmentation. RW/Be increases with pout, indicative of constituent multiple scattering.

Comparison of p + A and Si + Au collisions at 14.6-GeV/c

Phys.Rev.Lett. 66 (1991) 1567-1570, 1991.
Inspire Record 331219 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19913

The production of π±,K±,p has been measured in p+Be and p+Au collisions for comparison with central Si+Au collisions. The inverse slope parameters T0 obtained by an exponential fit to the invariant cross sections in transverse mass are found to be, T0p,K+,ππ∼140–160 MeV in p+A collisions, whereas in central Si+Au collisions, T0p,K+∼200–220 MeV >T0ππ∼140–160 MeV at midrapidity. The π± and K+ distributions are shifted backwards in p+Au compared with p+Be. A gradual increase of (dn/dy)K+ per projectile nucleon is observed from p+Be to p+Au to central Si+Au collisions, while pions show no significant increase.

Measurement of Interference Between $W$ and $Z$ Exchange in $\nu_e$ Electron Scattering

Allen, R.C. ; Chen, H.H. ; Doe, P.J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 64 (1990) 1330, 1990.
Inspire Record 283094 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19968

A measurement of the reaction νe+e−→νe+e− was performed using a beam-stop source of νe. Based upon 234±35 events, we obtain a cross section of σ(νee)=[9.9±1.5(stat)±1.0(syst)]×10−42 cm2 ×[Eν (GeV)]. This reaction is mediated by the exchange of W and Z bosons and is thus sensitive to the interference between them. This interference is measured to be -1.07±0.17(stat)±0.11(syst), consistent with the destructive interference (-1.08) predicted by the standard model.

The ratio of cross sections for inelastic muon scattering on xenon and deuterium nuclei was measured at very low Bjorken x (0.000 02<xBj<0.25). The data were taken at Fermilab experiment E-665 with a 490 GeV/c muon beam incident on liquid deuterium and gaseous xenon targets. Two largely independent analysis techniques gave statistically consistent results. The xenon-to-deterium per-nucleon cross-section ratio is constant at approximately 0.7 for xBj below 0.003.

Total and differential cross-sections for pi+ + d ---> p + p below 21-MeV

Ritchie, B.G. ; Minehart, R.C. ; Averett, T.D. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 66 (1991) 568-571, 1991.
Inspire Record 316997 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19907

Absolute total and differential cross sections for the reaction π++d→p+p have been measured for pion energies from 3.7 to 20.5 MeV. Evidence for p-wave strength was observed for all energies. Using detailed balance and corrections for Coulomb effects, the measured differential and total cross sections were found to be consistent with recent measurements for the reaction n+p→d+π0, offering no evidence for charge-independence breaking. The measured total cross sections for energies below 30 MeV are in disagreement with predictions by Blankleider and by Vogelzang, Bakker, and Boersma.
