Heavy Quark Charge Asymmetries With the Cello Detector

The production ofb andc quarks ine+e− annihilation has been studied with the CELLO detector in the range from 35 GeV up to the highest PETRA energies. The heavy quarks have been tagged by their semileptonic decays. The charge asymmetries forb quarks at 35 and 43 GeV have been found to beAb=−(22.2±8.1)% andAb=−(49.1±16.5)%, respectively, using a method incorporating jet variables and their correlations for the separation of the heavy quarks from the back ground of the lighter quarks. Forc quarks we obtainAc=−(12.9±8.8)% andAc=+(7.7±14.0)%, respectively. The axial vector coupling constants of the heavy quarksc andb are found to beac=+(0.29±0.46) andab=−(1.15±0.41) taking\(B^0 \overline {B^0 } \) mixing into account. The results are in agreement with the expectations from the standard model.

Comparison of Inclusive Fractional Momentum Distributions of Quark and Gluon Jets Produced in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

Inclusive charged particle production ine+e− annihilation into hadrons is studied in terms of the particle fractional momentumxp. Thexp distribution for gluon jets is extracted by comparing two data samples measured in the TASSO detector: nearly symmetric three jet events at centre-of-mass energyW∼35 GeV and two jet events atW∼22 GeV, yielding quark and gluon jets of similar energies (∼11.5 GeV). No significant difference is observed between quark and gluon jets. Monte Carlo models based on parton showers describe the trend and energy variation of the data better than a model with second order matrix element in αs.

A Measurement of the Charmed Quark Asymmetry in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation

The charmed quark charge asymmetry has been measured at the average centre of mass energy of 35 GeV with the JADE detector at thee+e− storage ring PETRA. Charmed quarks were identified byD*± tagging using the ΔM technique.D*± mesons were reconstructed through their decay intoD0 mesons resulting in (Kπ) π and (K π π π) π final states. The measured charge asymmetryA=−0.149±0.067 is in agreement with the expectation from the electroweak interference effect in quantum flavour dynamics (QFD).

FORWARD - BACKWARD CHARGE ASYMMETRY IN e+ e- ---> HADRON JETS

The forward-backward asymmetry of quarks produced in e+e− annihilations, summed over all flavors, is measured at √s between 50 and 60.8 GeV. Methods of determining the charge direction of jet pairs are discussed. The asymmetry is found to agree with the five-flavor standard model.

A New Determination of the Electroweak Mixing Angle From $\nu_\mu$ Electron Scattering

We are reporting on a new determination of sin 2 ϑ w from the ratio of v μ e to v e scattering cross sections. A new detector designed for this purpose was exposed tothe Wide Band Neutrino Beamof the 450 GeV (CERN SPS. An analysis of data taken in 1987 and 1988 is presented based on 762 v μ e and 1017 v e events. From the ratio of σ( v μ e ) to σ( v μ e ) we determined sin 2 ϑ w =0.233±0.012 ( stat ) ± 0.008 ( syst ) without radiative correction. With radiative correction for m t = m H =100 GeV we find sin 2 ϑ w =0.232±0.012( stat )±0.008( syst ).

Hidden Strangeness in the Proton? Determination of the Real Part of the Isospin Even - Forward Scattering Amplitude of Pion Nucleon Scattering at 54.3-{MeV}

The contradiction of the σ term of pion-nucleon scattering as deduced from the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase shifts with the smaller value calculated by the chiral perturbation theory of QCD is well known. In an effort to clarify the discrepancy we have determined the real part of the isospin-even forward-scattering amplitude of pion-nucleon scattering at a pion energy Tπ=54.3 MeV by measurement of the elastic scattering of positive and negative pions on protons in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The deduced value is in agreement with the prediction of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase-shift analysis for that energy. The resulting large value of the σ term may be interpreted as being due to the influence of s¯s sea pairs even at large distances (small Q2) as previously suggested by the European Muon Collaboration measurement of deep-inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons.

Charge Asymmetry of Hadron Jets and Limits on the Compositeness Scales in e$^{+} $e$^{-} \To $q$ \Bar{$q$}$ Reaction at $\Sqrt{$s$}=57$.6-{GeV}

A charge asymmetry has been measured in hadron jets from e + e − annihilation at energies between 52 and 61.4 geV (〈√ s 〉=57.6 GeV). The measured asymmetry is A =11.4%±2.2%±2.1% and is consistent with the prediction of the standard model of the electroweak theory. By using the differential cross section, lower limits of the compositeness scale in eeqq contact interactions have been determined to be typically a few TeV at 95% CL.

Experimental Study of the Orientation of Three Jet Events in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation at {PETRA}

The full TASSO data have been used to study the orientation of three-jet events ine+e− annihilation. The polar angle distributions of the normal to the three-jet plane as well as the polar angle distribution of the most energetic jet have been measured as a function of the thrust cut-off used to select the three-jet sample. The data corrected for radiation and detector effects are compared to QCD predictions and fair agreement is found. As a consistency check we also present measurements of the azimuthal correlations between the lepton and hadron planes. A significant azimuthal dependence is found, consistent again with the QCD predictions.

Measurement of W and Z Production Cross-sections at the CERN $\bar{p}p$ Collider

Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e+e− decays. The measured cross sections are σWe = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σZe = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38−0.72+0.82(stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

Production of Charmed Mesons in $\gamma \gamma$ Interactions

Production of charmed mesons in γγ-interactions at PETRA energies has been observed in the TASSO detector. Cross sections for inclusiveD*± and\(D^0 \bar D^0 \) production have been measured. Neutral and charged meson pairs are estimated to be produced with comparable cross sections, and their sum seems to account for a sizeable fraction of σtot(γγ→hadrons) near the\(c\bar c\) threshold.
