We present differential cross sections and the Σ + polarization for the reactions K − p → π ∓ Σ ± using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The statistical level allows a detailed analysis of these reactions over the whole t range. Several significant structures are observed. Comparisons are made with SU(3)-related reactions; for backward production of π − Σ + such a comparison shows good evidence for Δ exchange. The exotic forward peak in K − p → π + Σ − is definitely confirmed.

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to study K − p interactions in the c.m. energy range 1775 to 1957 MeV. For the reactions K − p → K − p, K − p → K 0 n , K − p → Λπ 0 and K − p → Σ ± π ∓ channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained. The channel cross sections for K − p → Σ 0 π 0 are presented. In general the results are in agreement with those previously published although a significant discrepancy has been found in the Σ ± π ∓ cross sections at the lower energies. New measurements of the Σ ± lifetimes have also been obtained ( τ Σ − = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10 −10 sec, τ Σ + = 0.807 ± 0.013 × 10 −10 sec).

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to K − p interactions over the c.m. energy range 1720 to 1796 MeV. Channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained for the final states K − p , K 0 n , π 0 Λ and π ± Σ ∓ . These data are compared with those from previously published experiments and with the predictions from the RL-IC 77 partial-wave amplitudes for each of these channels.

EXTRAPOLATED FORWARD AND BACKWARD DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTIONS.
K − p reactions have been studied at 13 different incident momenta between 1138 and 1434 MeV/ c . This interval corresponds to a mass of the K − p system varying from 1858 to 1993 MeV. About 300 000 photographs were taken in the 81 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a separated K − beam at the CERN proton-synchrotron. A total of about 44 000 events were analyzed, from which partial and differential cross sections were determined. Polarizations were obtained for the two-body reactions where the decay of the Λ or Σ hyperon allowed their measurement. Data for the two-body channels are presented here as well as for the main quasi-two-body reactions.

The K − p reactions leading to charge exchange and hyperon final states have been studied at nine momenta between 862 and 1001 MeV/ c using data from a 600 000 picture exposure of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory 25″ liquid hydrogen bubble chamber. Partial cross sections are determined for all final states resolved by kinematic fitting. In addition, differential cross sections are presented for the two-body final states K o n , Λπ o and Σ +- π -+ along with hyperon polarization angular distributions for Λπ o and Σ + π − .

We present data on K − p reactions leading to the final states K 0 n , π 0 Λ, ηΛ, η'Λ, π − Σ + , K 0 Δ 0 (1230), and π − Σ + (1385) from a bubble chamber experiment at 14.3 GeV/ c K − lab momentum. Total and differential cross sections, Λ and Σ ∓ polarisations in π 0 Λ and π − Σ + final states as well as the Σ + (1385) density matrix elements are given.

We have measured the differential cross sections for K − p→ Σ + π − and K − p→ Σ − π + scattering, and the polarization distribution of the Σ + in the first reaction, at K − lab momenta of 3.13 and 3.30 GeV/ c . Our K − p→ Σ + π − cross sections are at least 40% larger than interpolations between measurements at nearby momenta. A comparison using isospin conservation of K − p →Σ + π − , K − p →Σ − π + , and K 0 p → Σ 0 π + cross sections favors our results. The K − p→ Σ + π − differential cross sections have about the same shape and are about twice as large as corresponding K − p→ Λπ 0 differential cross sections across the whole forward region. We discuss the results briefly with reference to simple exchange models.

Final states π − Σ + , π + Σ − , π o Λ and ηΛ were studied for K − p reactions at 3.95 GeV/ c . Cross sections, angular distributions and polarizations are presented. Data for π − Σ + and π o Λ production are compared to the line-reversed πp reactions at the same beam momentum. Baryon-exchange peaks are presented for the Σ + π − , Σ − π + and Λπ o final states.

The polarization of the Σ+ has been measured for the line-reversed reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and K−p→π−Σ+ at 7 and 11.6 GeV/c using the SLAC Hybrid Facility. Since the Σ+ decay is observed in the bubble chamber, the trigger of the flash lamps on a fast K+(π−) did not bias the polarization measurements. We find that the Σ+ polarizations from the two reactions have opposite signs but similar magnitudes and are in much better agreement with the predictions of weak exchange degeneracy than previous lower-energy comparisons.
