We have made measurements of polarization in π−p elastic scattering, with emphasis over the backward region, at 1.60 to 2.28 GeVc. The results indicate the absence of u-channel dominance in the backward region, as was observed in the case of π+p scattering. Comparisons have been made with predictions of various phase-shift analyses which show that the agreement is generally very poor in the backward region.

Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

We present results of a K − d experiment performed with the 81 cm Saclay deuterium bubble chamber which was exposed to a K − beam at 4 momenta between 680 and 840 MeV/ c at the CERN PS. Cross sections were measured for inelastic two- and three-body K − n reactions on the basis of 5200 events/mb. Resonance production in the three-body reactions is discussed. In addition, differential cross sections and polarisations are presented for inelastic two-body reactions.

An experiment has been completed at the Daresbury synchrotron to measure the asymmetry in the photoproduction cross section of neutral pions on hydrogen, for photons polarised normal to and in the production plane. The source of polarised photons was coherent bremsstrahlung of electrons traversing the lattice structure of diamond and the polarisation P of the γ beam was calculated from the measured intensity of the coherent spike. The asymmetry parameter Σ, defined as Σ = ( σ ⊥ − σ |)/( σ ⊥ + σ |) where σ ⊥( σ |) are the cross sections for photons polarised perpendicular (parallel) to the production plane, has been measured over a range of photon energies from 1.2 to 2.8 GeV and over a range of − t (the square of the four-momentum transfer) from 0.13 (GeV/ c ) 2 to 1.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A marked energy variation in the value of Σ is found over the energy region 1.6–1.8 GeV.

The polarization and the differential cross section in π−p elastic scattering have been measured at incident pion laboratory momenta of 1.70, 1.88, 2.07, 2.27, and 2.50 GeV/c. The experiment was carried out at the Argonne zero-gradient synchrotron with a polarized proton target. Details of the apparatus and data analysis are presented here together with the final results. A partial-wave analysis of the data has verified the JP=72+ assignment for the Δ(1950) and established a JP=72− assignment for the N(2190). It does not support a JP=112+ assignment for the Δ(2460), nor does it give support for some of the possible resonances found in the CERN phase-shift analysis. Apart from the resonance behavior, the partial-wave analysis reveals several new features. We find a striking correlation among the various partial-wave amplitudes at the highest energy, which is different for J=l+12 and J=l−12. In addition, several fixed-(−t) features of high-energy scattering emerge in the energy region of this analysis.

Analysing powers and differential cross sections for p p → π − π + and p p → K − K + have been measured over the full angular range using a polarised target at LEAR at 20 beam momenta from 360 to 1550 MeV/ c . Discrepancies in the normalisation of earlier d σ/ d Ω data at low momenta are clarified. Above 1000 MeV/ c , A 0N results confirm values close to +1 over most of the angular range for both reactions, in excellent agreement with earlier data of lower statistics. Below 1000 MeV/ c , where the analysing power is measured for the first time, large variations of A 0N with energy and angle are present.

Angular distributions of recoil-proton polarization in elastic π±p scattering were measured at 523-, 572-, and 689-MeV incident pion kinetic energy. Polarization measurements were made by observing the azimuthal asymmetry in the subsequent scattering of recoil protons in large carbon-plate spark chambers. Typical strong variation of the polarization with pion scattering angle near the πp diffraction minima was observed. Since existing opinion favors a D13 resonance at 600 MeV, a phase-shift analysis was attempted in order to confirm the existence and parity of this resonance. Available πp total and differential cross sections, these polarization data, and some possible restrictive assumptions related to the 600-MeV resonance were used in the analysis. Though the polarization results aided significantly in restricting the number of acceptable phase-shift sets, still, many plausible and qualitatively different sets were found.

The asymmetry in the scattering of π− mesons by polarized protons has been measured at 50 different momenta from 0.643 to 2.14 GeV/c. Results were obtained at values of cosθ ranging from approximately +0.9 to -0.95 in the c.m. system at each incident pion momentum. The pion beam was incident on a 7.6-cm-long crystal assembly of lanthanum magnesium nitrate, in which the hydrogen in the water of crystallization was polarized by the "solid effect." The total momentum spread of the beam was 10% (full width at half-height) and data were collected simultaneously in 4 momentum channels, each with 2½% full width at half-height. A gas Čherenkov counter was used to reject incoming electrons. Scattered particles were detected in scintillation counter arrays placed within the 10-cm gap of the polarized target magnet. Encoded information from each array was stored in the memory of a PDP-5 computer connected on-line to a fast electronic logic network. The computer was programmed to classify the events according to momentum and scattering angle and subdivide them into coplanar and noncoplanar categories. The latter provided a measure of the background. The results have been expressed in the form of an expansion in terms of first associated Legendre polynomial series and compared with the predictions of recent phase-shift solutions. It is concluded that although these analyses give satisfactory predictions of the general features of the results, no one solution gives complete agreement with the data above about 1.0 GeV/c.

Results are presented of an investigation of the polarization of recoil protons appearing in elastic 1r+ -p scattering through an angle of 140 ± 8° in the c.m.s. at an energy of 307 ± 5 Mev. A polarization value P 1 = -0.19 ± 0.17 has been deriver from the data on the magnitude of the left-right asymmetry in elastic scattering of recoil protons on photographic emulsion nuclei. Phase shifts satisfying the indicated polarization value and consistent with the differential cross section for elastic scattering of 71"+ -mesons by protons are given by Eq. (1). The differential cross section and recoil-proton polarization in π−−p elastic scattering at 310-MeV incident-pion energy has been measured. The differential cross section was measured at 28 angles in the angular region 25<~θlab<~160 deg. The fractional rms errors were typically 3%. The reaction was observed by counting the scattered pions emerging from a liquid-hydrogen target with a counter telescope consisting of scintillation and Čerenkov counters. Simultaneously, the recoil-proton polarization was measured at four angles in the angular region 114<θc.m.<146 deg. The recoil protons from the liquid-hydrogen target were scattered from a carbon target and the left-right asymmetry was measured. Scintillation counters were used throughout to detect the particles.

K − p reactions have been studied at 13 different incident momenta between 1138 and 1434 MeV/ c . This interval corresponds to a mass of the K − p system varying from 1858 to 1993 MeV. About 300 000 photographs were taken in the 81 cm Saclay hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a separated K − beam at the CERN proton-synchrotron. A total of about 44 000 events were analyzed, from which partial and differential cross sections were determined. Polarizations were obtained for the two-body reactions where the decay of the Λ or Σ hyperon allowed their measurement. We report measurements of the exclusive electroproduction of $K^+\Lambda$ and $K^+\Sigma^0$ final states from a proton target using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The separated structure functions $\sigma_T$, $\sigma_L$, $\sigma_{TT}$, and $\sigma_{LT}$ were extracted from the $\Phi$- and $\epsilon$-dependent differential cross sections taken with electron beam energies of 2.567, 4.056, and 4.247 GeV. This analysis represents the first $\sigma_L/\sigma_T$ separation with the CLAS detector, and the first measurement of the kaon electroproduction structure functions away from parallel kinematics. The data span a broad range of momentum transfers from $0.5\leq Q^2\leq 2.8$ GeV$^2$ and invariant energy from $1.6\leq W\leq 2.4$ GeV, while spanning nearly the full center-of-mass angular range of the kaon. The separated structure functions reveal clear differences between the production dynamics for the $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma^0$ hyperons. These results provide an unprecedented data sample with which to constrain current and future models for the associated production of strangeness, which will allow for a better understanding of the underlying resonant and non-resonant contributions to hyperon production.

The polarized target asymmetry for the process γ p → π + n has been measured for incident photon energies below 1.02 GeV over a range of c.m. angles from 40° to 160°. π + mesons from a polarized butanol target were detected by a magnetic spectrometer. The reaction γ V p → p π + π − was studied in the W , Q 2 region 1.3–2.8 GeV, 0.3–1.4 GeV 2 using the streamer chamber at DESY. A detailed analysis of rho production via γ V p→ ϱ 0 p is presented. Near threshold rho production has peripheral and non-peripheral contributions of comparable magnitude. At higher energies ( W > 2 GeV) the peripheral component is dominant. The Q 2 dependence of σ ( γ V p→ ϱ 0 p) follows that of the rho propagator as predicted by VDM. The slope of d σ /d t at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 0.4 and 0.8 GeV 2 is within errors equal to its value at Q 2 = 0. The overall shape of the ϱ 0 is t dependent as in photoproduction, but is independent of Q 2 . The decay angular distribution shows that longitudinal rhos dominate in the threshold region. At higher energies transverse rhos are dominant. Rho production by transverse photons proceeds almost exclusively by natural parity exchange, σ T N ⩾ (0.83 ± 0.06) σ T for 2.2 < W < 2.8 GeV. The s -channel helicity-flip amplitudes are small compared to non-flip amplitudes. The ratio R = σ L / σ T was determined assuming s -channel helicity conservation. We find R = ξ 2 Q 2 / M ϱ 2 with ξ 2 ≈ 0.4 for 〈 W 〉 = 2.45 GeV. Interference between rho production amplitudes from longitudinal and transverse photons is observed. With increasing energy the phase between the two amplitudes decreases. The observed features of rho electroproduction are consistent with a dominantly diffractive production mechanism for W > 2 GeV.

We report the first measurement of the vector analyzing power in inclusive transversely polarized elastic electron-proton scattering at Q^2 = 0.1 (GeV/c)^2 and large scattering angles. This quantity should vanish in the single virtual photon exchange, plane wave impulse approximation for this reaction, and can therefore provide information on double photon exchange amplitudes for electromagnetic interactions with hadronic systems. We find a non-zero value of A=-15.4+/-5.4 ppm. No calculations of this observable for nuclei other than spin 0 have been carried out in these kinematics, and the calculation using the spin orbit interaction from a charged point nucleus of spin 0 cannot describe these data.
