The reaction of K − p → Σ + (1660) π − was studied in a 65 event/μb sample of Σππ(π), Λππ(π) and p K 0 π − final states. The main production features observed are that the Σ (1660) decaying into Σππ is mostly Λ (1405) π and is produced only at small t ; the Σ (1660) decaying into Σπ shows both forward and backward production. This confirms earlier results suggesting the existence of two Σ (1660) resonances. An Adair analysis and a (model-dependent) moments analysis find a J = 3 2 preference for the Σ + (1660)→ Λ (1405) π + → Σ + π − π + ; a Dalitz-Miller analysis of the decay Σ + (1660) → Λ (1405) π + → Σ − π + π + determines J P to be 3 2 − . For the Σ + (1660) → Σ 0 π + a moments analysis suggests J = 3 2 . Branching ratios are determined, which (with the exceptation of the Λ (1405) π mode) are in reasonable agreement with results from formation experiments for the J P = 3 2 − Σ(1660) resonance. We compare our branching ratios with SU(3) and SU(6) predictions; the latter comparison suggests that, unless there is strong configuration mixing, Σ (1660) → Λ (1405) π , if 3 2 − , cannot be a member of the (70, 1 − ) multiplet.

In a high statistics ( ∼150 eV μb ) bubble chamber experiment on K − p interactions at 8.25 GeV c , the study of the reaction K − p → KK Λ provides evidence for an enhancement in the KK system with a mass of (1850 ± 10) MeV and a width of (80 −30 +40 ) MeV. Its possible identification with the missing isosinglet of the 3 − nonet is discussed. A K ∗ K decay mode is also observed.

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.

A partial wave analysis of the K 0 π + π − system produced in the charge exchange reaction K − p → ( K 0 π + π − ) n at 4.2 GeV/ c has been performed both as a function of Kππ mass and of t ′. The 1 + S wave forms the largest contribution to the K ππ system and peaks at roughly the same mass as the Q in diffractive K ππ production. The polarization properties of the 1 + S ( K ∗ π) and 1 + S (Kϱ) waves differ fromt those of the diffractive 1 + wave. There is some evidence for a resonance contribution to 1 + S ( K ∗ π) . The strong 2 + wave the K ∗ (1420) and the K ϱ/ K ∗ ϱ decay branching ratio determined to be 0.36±0.10. An enhancement with spin-parity 1 − is observed under K ∗ (1420) .

In a high statistics (90 events/μb) bubble chamber experiment, the reactions π − p→K s 0 K ± π ∓ n have been studied at 3.95 GeV/ c . A significant enhancement is observed in the ( K K π) system which we attribute to the production of the E(1420) meson. For its mass, M , and width, Λ, we find M =1426±6 MeV and Γ =40±15 MeV. The E(1420) quantum numbers are determined to be I G J P =0 + 1 + with a branching ratio E → K ∗ K + c.c E →[δπ+( K ∗ K + c.c. )]=0.86±0.12 , where δ→ K K . The cross section for the reaction π − p→En, with E→K 0 K ± π ± , is 8.2±1.0 μ b. Forward and backward productions are observed in the approximate ratio 2:1. After summarizing the properties of the socalled Dalitz Array (DA), which is a genuine characteristics of a resonance, we determine those of the well known ε, γ, andA2 resonances produced in theK−p→π+π−π0Λ final state at 4.2 Ge V/c. Q-meson production is studied in the hypercharge exchange reaction π-p → (Kππ)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c by selecting events witht(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2. An enhancement with a mass of 1294±10 MeV and a width of 66±15 MeV is observed in the (Kππ) mass distribution. A spin-parity analysis of the (Kππ) decay Dalitz plot shows the enhancement to be in theJP=1+S(Kϱ) wave and is therefore attributed toQ1-meson production. No evidence is found for the decayQ1→K0ω but limited statistics allow only placing an upper limit of 30% for the decay ratioKω/Kϱ0. TheQ1 production cross section fort(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2 is 8±1.3 μb. No evidence is found for the process π-p→Q2Λ withQ2→K*π for which the partial wave analysis gives an upper cross section limit of 2.5 μb at the 95% confidence level.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

We report on the results of a partial-wave analysis of the 3π system produced by baryon exchange in the reaction K − p→ Σ − π + π + π − at 4.2 GeV/ c . We confirm the existence of an enhancement in the 1 + S( ϱπ ) wave as previously established from a Dalitz plot analysis of the same data. The phase variation of this wave is found to be consistent with that expected for a resonance and thus the enhancement is identified with A 1 production. No clear signal for this state is found in either the reaction K − p→ Σ + π + π + π − π − or K − p→ Λπ + π − π 0 . We also find production via baryon exchange of the A 2 in all three reactions and the ω and ω ∗ (1975) in the third reaction.

A ( K π π ) + mass enhancement is observed in the reactions K − p → Ξ −K o + π + π o − when events with a small (K − → Ξ − ) four momentum transfer squared are selected. The signal is also visible in the reaction K − p → Ξ − π + + neutrals. The enhancement, centered at 1.28 GeV, is seen to decay preferentially into Kϱ with spin-parity J P = 1 + . In this letter results are presented on the reactions K − p → K 0 n and K − p → K − p from a high statistics CERN 2-metre hydrogen bubble chamber exposure at 4.15 GeV/ c . The behaviour of the differential cross section as a function of four-momentum transfer shows remarkable similarities between the two reactions studied. From a comparison of our data with K + p elastic scattering at 4.27 GeV/ c we draw some conclusions concerning the magnitude of the contributing amplitudes.

An analysis is presented of the reaction K − p → K 0 π − p at 4.2 GeV /c incident momentum, using analytical techniques in fully dimensional phase space. This methods allows to isolate the contributions of the 0 + , 1 − and 2 + (K π ) partial waves in various helecity Separating well-understood contributions from the rest, the method is particularly useful for the detection of small effects (≈1% of the total final-state cross section) not visible in the mass distributions: (i) small cross-section contributions of 3 − (K π partial waves, K ∗ (1780), are unambiguously isolated; (ii) 3.5σ evidence is given for Σ(1480) in the (p K 0 ) system; (iii) effects due to a second K π P-wave or the possible presence of a doubly peripheral mechanism are discussed. The method furthermore allows simultaneous treatment of the (K π ) partial waves, p π ) partial waves and their interferences and of a Σ(1765) signal (with spin 5 2 ). While interferences within the (K π ) and within the (p π ) systems are strongly determining the corresponding distributions, no interference between these systems is needed.

DELPHI results are presented on the inclusive production of the neutral mesons ρ 0 , f 0 (980), f 2 (1270), K ∗0 2 (1430) and f ′ 2 (1525) in hadronic Z 0 decays. They are based on about 2 million multihadronic events collected in 1994 and 1995, using the particle identification capabilities of the DELPHI Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors and measured ionization losses in the Time Projection Chamber. The total production rates per hadronic Z 0 decay have been determined to be: 1.19±0.10 for ρ 0 ; 0.164±0.021 for f 0 (980); 0.214±0.038 for f 2 (1270); 0.073±0.023 for K ∗0 2 (1430) ; and 0.012±0.006 for f ′ 2 (1525). The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider.
