Measurements of energy-energy correlations in hadronic final states produced in e + e − annihilation at c.m. energies between 7.7 and 31.6 GeV are presented. The data are compared to perturbative QCD predictions. Good qualitative agreement above 20 GeV c.m. energy is found. The importance of non-perturbative effects is discussed, as well as the detailed behaviour of the correlation near 180°.

ENERGY-ENERGY CORRELATION INTEGRATED IN THE REGION 60 TO 120 DEG.
Measurements of the charged multiplicities for hadron production in e + e − annihilation in the center of mass energy range 9–32 GeV have been made. The average charged multiplicity has an energy dependence much stronger than ln s and similar to that reported for pp collisions. Quantitative differences are observed in the magnitude of both the average multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉 and the dispersion D ch for e + e − and pp interactions at the same center of mass energy. 〈 n ch 〉 and the ratio 〈 n ch / D ch in e + e − annihilations are significantly larger than in pp collisions and are found to be in overall agreement with QCD predictions. KNO scaling is seen to be satisfied.

Results on e + e − annihilation into hadrons at c.m. energies between 22 and 31.6 GeV are presented. The data were accumulated with the PLUTO detector at PETRA. The events are dominantly of the two-jet type. The value of the relative hadronic cross section R =3.88 ± 0.22 along with the details of the sphericity and thrust distribution rule out an open (tt̄) channel (Q t = 2 3 ) below 30 GeV. The inclusive muon results support the above conclusion.

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS is performing a uniqe study of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter by varying collision energy and nuclear mass number of colliding nuclei. In central Pb+Pb collisions the NA49 experiment found structures in the energy dependence of several observables in the CERN SPS energy range that had been predicted for the transition to a deconfined phase. New measurements of NA61/SHINE find intriguing similarities in p+p interactions for which no deconfinement transition is expected at SPS energies. Possible implications will be discussed.

The reactione+e−→µ+µ− has been studied at centre of mass energies between 35.0 and 46.8 GeV using the TASSO detector at PETRA. We present measurements of the forward-backward charge asymmetry (Aμμ) and cross section σμμ for this reaction at three energies. We report on an analysis of the multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced ine+e− annihilation into hadrons at c.m. energies between 14 and 46.8 GeV. The charged multiplicity distributions of the whole event and single hemisphere deviate significantly from the Poisson distribution but follow approximate KNO scaling. We have also studied the multiplicity distributions in various rapidity intervals and found that they can be well described by the negative binomial distribution only for small central intervals. We have also analysed forward-backward multiplicity correlations for different energies and selections of particle charge and shown that they can be understood in terms of the fragmentation properties of the different quark flavours and by the production and decay of resonances. These correlations are well reproduced by the Lund string model.

Energy-energy-correlations (EEC) have been measured with the JADE detector at c.m. energies of 14 GeV, 22 GeV and in the region 29 GeV<Ecm<36 GeV. Corrected results are presented of EEC and their asymmetry, which can be directly compared to theoretical predictions. At 〈Ecm〉=34 GeV a comparison with second order QCD predictions yields good agreement for the string model fragmentation resulting in a value of the strong coupling constant αs=0.165±0.01 (stat.). The independent fragmentation models, which yield values of αs between 0.10 and 0.15 depending on the treatment of energy and momentum conservation and of the gluon splitting, do not provide a satisfactory description of the data over the full angular range.

The topology of hadronic e + e − annihilation events has been analysed using the sphericity tensor and a cluster method. Comparison with quark models including gluon bremsstrahlung yields good agreement with the data. The strong-coupling constant is determined in 1st order QCD to be α S =0.19±0.04 (stat) ± 0.04 (syst.) at 22 GeV and α S =0.16 ±0.02± 0.03 at 34 GeV. The differential cross section with respect to the energy fraction carried by the most energetic parton agrees with the prediction of QCD, but cannot be reproduced by a scalar gluon model. Data accumulated by the TASSO detector across the whole range of energies spanned at PETRA, 12⩽ s ⩽46.8 GeV , have been analysed in terms of cluster algorithms. Using parameters optimised at 35 GeV CM energy, three perturbative QCD+fragmentation models were compared with the data. The O( α s 2 ) model gives too few 4,5- cluster events, implying that higher order QCD contributions are required to describe the data. The parton cascade model, incorporating many orders in perturbation theory, gives a better description of the rates of ⩾ 4 clusters, but shows a lack of hard gluon emission by giving too few 3-, and too many 2-cluster events. When hard gluon emission is taken into account, by the cascade model incorporating the O( α s ) matrix element, all cluster rates are reproduced well. All the models describe the trend of the evolution of the cluster rates between 〈 s 〉 = 14 and 43.8 GeV. We find that the rate of 3-jet events seen in the data decreases as s increases in a manner consistent with the Q 2 dependence of α s as predicted by QCD.

Using data from the TPC/Two-Gamma experiment at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, a C=+1 resonance has been observed in the π+π−π0γ final state resulting from the fusion of one nearly real and one quite virtual photon. The actual decay channel is probably π+π−π0π0, where one final-state photon is not detected, and the mass of the fully reconstructed state would be approximately 1525 MeV. A four-pion decay mode in turn implies that the resonance has even isospin. The nonobservation of this R(1525) when both initial-state photons are nearly real suggests a spin-1 assignment. Since the large measured value of the product of the branching ratio into π+π−π0π0 and the γγ coupling makes it unlikely that this state is the mostly s¯s f1(1510), its interpretation may lie outside of conventional meson spectroscopy. There is a second, less-significant enhancement observed in the same reaction at a four-pion mass centered around 2020 MeV.

We measure R (the total cross section in units of the point-like e + e - → μ + μ - cross section) to be 2.9 ± 0.7, 4.0 ± 0.5, 4.6 ± 0.4 and 4.2 ± 0.6 at s of 22, 27.7, 30 and 31.6 GeV, respectively. The observed average multiplicity, together with existing low energy data, indicate a rapid increase in multiplicity with increasing energy.
STATISTICAL ERRORS ONLY. RADIATIVE CORRECTIONS APPLIED AND TAU HEAVY LEPTON CONTRIBUTION SUBTRACTED. AVERAGE VALUE OF R FOR ALL THESE DATA IS 4.14 +- 0.26.
AVERAGE CHARGE MULTIPLICITY. ADDITIONAL, SYSTEMATIC ERROR IS ABOUT 1.5.
Hadron production by e + e − annihilation has been studied for c.m. energies W between 13 and 31.6 GeV. As a function of 1n W the charged particle multiplicity grows faster at high energy than at lower energies. This is correlated with a rise in the plateau of the rapidity distribution. The cross section s d σ /d x is found to scale within ±30% for x > 0.2 and 5 ⩽ W ⩽ 31.6 GeV.

We report measurements of π±K±, and p, p¯ inclusive cross sections and fractions in e+e− annihilation at s=29 GeV, for the momentum interval 0.01<z=ppbeam<0.90. The analysis is based on approximately 70 pb−1 of data collected with the TPC2γ detector facility at the SLAC storage ring PEP. Detector upgrades result in significantly improved momentum coverage and precision of the data, compared to previous measurements.

Pt of the leptons is determined relative to the thrust axis. B-DECAY, C-DECAY, C-SECONDARY and BKG are corresponded to fractions of leptons originationg from primary BQ deacy, primary CQ decay, secondary decay, and from background.
We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91±7pb−1 of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H0 decays to a bb¯ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V ( W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ(pp¯→H0V)β as a function of the scalar mass (MH0) over the range 70<MH0<140GeV/c2. When combined with an analysis of the case where V is a leptonically decaying W, these limits vary from 23 pb at MH0=70GeV/c2 to 17 pb at MH0=140GeV/c2.
Cross section from the hadronic analysis fit (C=MEASURED) plus 95 PCT confidence upper limits from the hadronic, leptonic and combined analyses.
The ratio of the W+≥1 jet cross section to the inclusive W cross section is measured using W±→e±ν events from p¯p collisions at s=1.8TeV. The data are from 108pb−1 of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Measurements of the cross section ratio for jet transverse energy thresholds (ETmin) ranging from 15 to 95 GeV are compared to theoretical predictions using next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. Data and theory agree well for ETmin>25GeV, where the predictions lie within 1 standard deviation of the measured values.
