Exclusive measurement of two-pion production in the dd --> 4Hepipi reaction

The results from the first kinematically complete measurement of the dd --> 4Hepipi reaction are reported. The aim was to investigate a long standing puzzle regarding the origin of the peculiar pipi-invariant mass distributions appearing in double pion production in light ion collisions, the so-called ABC effect. The measurements were performed at the incident deuteron energies of 712 MeV and 1029 MeV, with the WASA detector assembly at CELSIUS in Uppsala, Sweden. We report the observation of a characteristic enhancement at low pipi-invariant mass at 712 MeV, the lowest energy yet. At the higher energy, in addition to confirming previous experimental observations, our results reveal a strong angular dependence of the pions in the overall centre of mass system. The results are qualitatively reproduced by a theoretical model, according to which the ABC effect is described as resulting from a kinematical enhancement in the production of the pion pairs from two parallel and independent NN--> dpi sub-processes.

The differential cross section of the reactione+e−→e+e− at a c.m. energy of 34.7 GeV has been measured. The result, together with our previously measurede+e−→α+α− data, are compared with the standard model predictions. We obtain for the weak neutral current couplings the valuesgv2=0.09×0.06,ga2=0.38×0.08. A fit of the Weinberg mixing angle gives the valuegv2=0.09×0.06,ga2=0.038×0.08. The data are also used to set limits on possible deviations from the pointlike structure of leptons. An upper limit for thee+e− coupling to a heavy spin 0 boson is also given.

We present results of a K − d experiment performed with the 81 cm Saclay deuterium bubble chamber which was exposed to a K − beam at 4 momenta between 680 and 840 MeV/ c at the CERN PS. Cross sections were measured for inelastic two- and three-body K − n reactions on the basis of 5200 events/mb. Resonance production in the three-body reactions is discussed. In addition, differential cross sections and polarisations are presented for inelastic two-body reactions.

This paper presents the results of a study of the dominant neutral final states from π−p interactions. The data were obtained in an experiment performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, using a set of steel-plate optical spark chambers surrounding a liquid-hydrogen target. We present differential and total cross sections for the reactions (1) π−p→n+π0 and (2) π−p→n+η0(η0→2γ) and total cross sections for the reactions (3) π−p→n+kπ0 (k=2, 3, 4, and 5) and (4) π−p→all neutrals for eighteen values of beam momentum in the interval 1.3 to 4.0 GeV/c. The angular distributions for (1) and (2) have been analyzed in terms of expansions in Legendre polynomials, the coefficients for which are also given.

The reaction π−+p→π−+p has been studied in the 15-in. bubble chamber at the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator. The elastic scattering cross section was determined to be 8.5 ± 0.2 mb. The forward peak fits to an exponential in t with a slope of 8.1 ± 0.2 (GeV/c)−2. The forward differential cross section dσdΩ(0)=17.9±0.7 mb/sr. A fit of the center-of-mass angular distribution to Legendre polynomials needed terms up to the 12th order, corresponding to the highest nonzero partial wave of L=6.

The c.m. angular distribution of π+p elastic scattering at 1.6 GeV/c shows a strong forward diffraction peak decreasing exponentially with a slopeA + = (6.9±0.5) GeV−2 comparable to thatA − = (7.2±0.5) GeV−2 observed in a previous experiment for π-p elastic scattering at the same incident momentum. The behaviour of the π+ and the π− angular distributions is quite different beyond the diffraction peak. The π+p total elastic cross-section is found to be Σ01 = (16.70±0.45) mb.

The e + e − → τ + τ − process has been measured using the CELLO detector at a mean total centre of mass energy of 34.2 GeV using essentially all the decay channels of the τ lepton. The measured cross section yields R τ =1.03±0.05 (stat)±0.07 (syst). Topological branching fraction are given for τ → 1, 3 or 5 charged tracks. The angular distribution shows a clear 1 + cos 2 θ dependance with a forward-backward asymmetry of -0.103 ± 0.052 corresponding to an axial-vector coupling a τ of the τ to the weak neutral current given by a τ =−1.12 ± 0.57.

The ep -> e'pi^+n reaction was studied in the first and second nucleon resonance regions in the 0.25 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 0.65 GeV^2 range using the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time the absolute cross sections were measured covering nearly the full angular range in the hadronic center-of-mass frame. The structure functions sigma_TL, sigma_TT and the linear combination sigma_T+epsilon*sigma_L were extracted by fitting the phi-dependence of the measured cross sections, and were compared to the MAID and Sato-Lee models.
