We have measured the polarization of Λ and Λ hyperons produced by 800 GeV protons on a Be target at a fixed targeting angle of 4.8 mrad. Comparison with previous data at 400 GeV production energy and twice the targeting angle shows no significant energy dependence for the Λ polarization. This is in striking contrast to the energy dependence found for σ + and Ξ − polarizations. We find no evidence for Λ polarization at 800 GeV.
Errors are combined statistics and systematics.

A study of the inclusive polarization of Λ hyperons produced by 400-GeV/c protons incident on nuclear targets has been performed at Fermilab. The polarization P of the Λ has been mapped over a large range of xF and pT to good precision for pT up to 3.8 GeV/c. The magnitude of the polarization at fixed xF rises with pT to a plateau at about 1 GeV/c, and the size of the plateau increases monotonically with xF. The Λ¯ were found to be unpolarized for pT<2.4 GeV/c. A target-nucleus dependence for the Λ polarization has been observed.

The Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron polarized proton beam incident on a beryllium target was used for inclusive Λ production at beam momenta of 13.3 and 18.5 GeV/c. The beam polarization was transverse to the beam direction with magnitude 0.63 at 13.3 GeV/c and 0.40 at 18.5 GeV/c. The Λ polarization was measured and found to be in agreement with results from earlier experiments which used unpolarized proton beams. Analyzing power AN and spin transfer DNN of the Λ’s were both measured and compared with a hyperon-polarization model in which the polarization arises from a Thomas-precession effect. There is good agreement with its predictions: AN=0 and DNN=0. In particular, our measurement of 〈DNN〉=-0.009±0.015 supports the idea that the valence quarks carry all of the hadron spin, since this assumption is implicit in the model’s use of SU(6) wave functions to form final-state hadrons from beam fragments and sea quarks. The presence of substantial KS samples at both beam momenta and Λ¯’s at 18.5 GeV/c prompted a measurement of their analyzing powers, which yielded AN(KS)=-0.094±0.012 at 13.3 GeV/c beam momentum and -0.076±0.015 at 18.5 GeV/c, and AN(Λ¯)=0.03±0.10.

The ratio of the cross section for Σ0 inclusive production to the cross section for Λ0 inclusive production has been measured with 28.5-GeV/c protons incident on a beryllium target at an average laboratory production angle of 4°. This ratio was measured to be 0.278±0.011±0.05, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic in that order. The ratio does not depend strongly on the momentum of the produced particle between 10 and 24 GeV/c. The effect of Σ0 contamination on previous determinations of the polarization of inclusively produced Λ0’s is discussed.

The polarization of Σ 0 hyperons produced in an inclusive reactons hasbeen measured for the first time. From a sample of 11 000 events produced by 28.5 GeV/ c ptorons in the reaction p+ Be → Σ 0 +X, the Σ 0 polarization has a value of +0.28±0.13 at p t =1.01 GeV/ c and x f =0.60. The polarization of 53 000 Λ hyperons produced from 28.5 Gev/ c protons inthe reaction p+Be→ Λ +X has been measured in the kinematic range 0.64< p t <1.14 GeV/ c and 0.42< x f <0.62. The average Λ polarization is found to be −0.188±0.024, consistent with previous results.

Inclusive production cross sections have been measured for the processes p+A→Ξ0+X (A=Be, Cu, Pb) and for p+Be→Ξ¯0+X. Data were taken at angles of 0, 2, 3.5, 7.3, and 9.8 mrad between the incident 400-GeV proton beam and the outgoing hyperon beam. Production cross sections for Λ and Λ¯ production were measured at the same time. The A dependence of the Ξ0 cross sections is discussed, along with interpretations in terms of various models.

The polarization of 26 000 Σ+ hyperons produced by 400-GeV protons on Be has been measured. The polarizations of Σ+ and Λ hyperons have the opposite sign. The magnitude increases with momentum at 5-mrad production angle, and averages 22% over the momentum range 140 to 280 GeV/c.

A neutral beam designed to transmit a high flux of Λ0 hyperons with momenta above 50 GeV/c has been built and operated at Fermilab. Inclusive production cross sections per target nucleus have been measured for p+A→Λ0+X, p+A→KS0+X, and p+A→Λ¯0+X with 300-GeV protons incident on solid targets A=berylium, copper, andlead. The region of phase space covered is predominantly projectile fragmentation: 0.2<~x<~1, 0<~p⊥<~2 GeV/c. The A dependence of the inclusive cross sections is analyzed. The cross sections are compared to other work in pp collisions by extrapolating the A dependence to A=1. The results of measurements of Λ0 and Λ¯0 polarization from the beryllium target are presented.
