Total cross sections have been measured for H, He, 6 Li, C, O and Pb targets for 1 GeV incident energy protons. From the differential elastic scattering data published elsewhere, we also obtain the total elastic scattering and reaction cross sections for H, He, C and O. When our data are combined with other measurements in the same energy region, it is found that the total and reaction cross sections can be fit by the formulae σ T = 47 A 0.82 and σ R = 42 A 0.67 mb. It is also observed that the total and reaction cross sections for negative pions on nuclei can also be fit with these same A -dependencies.

Transverse energy measurements in proton - nucleus interactions at high-energy

The results of two sets of transverse energy measurements, performed with incident proton beams of 200 and 450 GeV/c momentum on several nuclear targets, are presented. The transverse energy cross sections dσ/dET are measured in a pseudorapidity range including the target fragmentation region (−0.1<η<2.9) for both data sets and also in a nearly complete pseudorapidity coverage (−0.1<η<5.5) for the data taken at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. A comparison is made of the transverse energy distributions in the target fragmentation region and in the full η region. We find that the mean value of pseudorapidity of the dET/dη distributions shifts towards the target fragmentation region as the atomic mass number of the target increases or a selection of high transverse energy events is made. A parametrization based on a simple geometrical nucleonnucleon scattering approach was found to be inadequate to describe all features of the transverse energy distributions. Finally, the VENUS model is compared with the experimental data.

Charged pion production in noninclusive proton - nucleus interactions at .8-GeV and 1.6-GeV incident energies

Lemaire, M.C. ; Trzaska, M. ; Alard, J.P. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.C 43 (1991) 2711-2721, 1991.
Inspire Record 304286 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.26174

Charged pions and light nuclei (p, d, t, He3, and He4) have been measured in the interaction of proton beams with C, Nb, and Pb targets at 0.8 and 1.6 GeV incident energies, using a large solid angle detector. From slices on the multiplicity of protonlike particles (free protons and protons bound in light fragments), the events have been sorted out into two classes corresponding to more peripheral and more central collisions. For each class of events, the mean value and the dispersion of the π+ and π− multiplicity distributions have been studied as a function of target mass and incident energy. Comparisons to the Liege intranuclear cascade predictions exhibit some discrepancies which are discussed.

The Transverse Energy Distribution in Hadron - Lead Collisions

Åkesson, T. ; Choi, Y. ; Dam, P. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 38 (1988) 397, 1988.
Inspire Record 250759 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.15655

The transverse energy cross-sectiondσ/dET has been measured in the pseudorapidity region 0.6<η<2.4 for hadron-lead collisions at 200 GeV/c incident hadron momentum. TheET distribution extends to 40 GeV, which is twice the kinematic limit forp-p collisions at the same incident beam momentum. The distribution ofET is found to shift towards low pseudorapidities with increasing total transverse energy.
