Inclusive and semi-inclusive ρ 0 production are studied in 205 GeV/ c pp interactions. The number of ρ 0 per inelastic event is 0.33 ± 0.06, so that (13 ± 2)% of the π − are products of ϱ 0 decay. The ρ 0 are found to be produced mainly near y = 0 and tend to have larger average transverse momentum than do pions.

Results are given on the inclusive production of charged pions, kaons, and nucleons, in proton-proton collisions at c.m. energies from √ s = 23 to 63 GeV at large angles and for the transverse momentum range 0.1 < p T < 4.8 GeV/ c . The dependence of the production spectra on the collision energy √ s , the transverse momentum p T , and the longitudinal rapidity is discussed.

Inclusive π− distributions from 205-GeV/c pp interactions, covering the full range of longitudinal and transverse momenta, have been obtained using the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at the National Accelerator Laboratory. These data provide new evidence for scaling in the fragmentation region and for a plateau in the central region of rapidity. The 90°-c.m. invariant cross section varies as exp[−(10±2)PT2] in the range PT2<~0.1 (GeV/c)2.

The transverse momentum distribution at 90° of pions, protons and antiprotons have been measured at the CERN intersecting storage rings for C.M. energies between 23.2 and 52.7 GeV. In this energy range, the pion and proton distributions are almost energy independent. The antiproton production rises by a factor of two between 23.2 and 52.7 GeV.

Data on the inclusive production spectra of K S 0 and Λ from proton-proton collisions at 19 GeV are presented and discussed in connection with the earlier studied inclusive π − production spectrum. An experiment was done in the external proton beam of the Berkeley 184-in. cyclotron to measure the production cross sections for pions from various target nuclei, from hydrogen to lead. Detailed measurements of the production of charged π mesons in proton-proton collisions are reported. The observed results are compared with the "isobar" and "one-pion exchange" models and for single production are in agreement if only the "resonant" part of the π−p cross section is used and if the angular distribution cos16θ is introduced for the production of the N1* isobar. The effects of higher resonances are also considered.
